Man has always liked doing exciting and challenging things; hence, it is no surprise that the concept of auto racing was launched as soon as the first gasoline fueled car was engineered. The first auto race was quite amusing as it took place in France on April 28, 1887, with only one participant as no other competitor showed up. The first elaborate motoring competition was held seven years later again in France and out of the sixty-nine cars in the selection event, only twenty five got through to the main event of racing from Paris to Rouen. With serious manufacturers like Panhard and Peugeot competing with amateur owners, it was no surprise that they were the winners of the race. Interestingly, the average speed of the fastest car was 19km/hr, which is an extremely slow speed considering our modern auto racing. France was the pioneer in auto racing events; the event debuted on American soil in Chicago on November 28, 1895 and sparked first real interest in the automobile in our country.
France continued to dominate both automobile construction and auto racing and started organizing city-to-city racing with international participants. However, due to a fatal accident in the Paris-Madrid race in 1903, the French government banned open-road racing. In 1908, the legendary longest auto race took place from New York to Paris covering 22,000 miles with an American Thomas flyer winning the difficult competition.
Auto racing was usually done on horse racing tracks, but this trend changed with the construction of a 2.75 miles concrete track in Brooklands, England in 1907. Over the years, auto racing evolved and pure racers with streamlined bodies were introduced in the 1930s. On the other hand, the concept of stock car racing came into being with the formation of the National Association for Stock Car Auto racing (NASCAR) in 1948.
Currently, one of the most popular and thrilling form of auto racing is the Formula Racing with single-seater cars and open wheels especially designed for optimal racing and adhesiveness to the road. The most well-known championship in this form of racing is the Formula 1 racing and its series of races known as the Grand Prix are highly anticipated events with a major television audience. Another prestigious open wheel national championship auto racing held in America is the IndyCar Series. The racing championship started in 1996 as a competitor for another national level racing organization called CART, but eventually merged with it and is now steadily reaching the popularity level of Formula One.
NASCAR arranges exciting auto racing events with stock cars. Stock cars look like normal sedans but have extreme racing abilities under the chassis. Their Sprint Cup Series and the Nationwide Series are very thrilling events, and interestingly, in terms of television viewership, NASCAR events are watched more than open wheel racing.
