France continued to dominate both automobile construction and auto racing and started organizing city-to-city racing with international participants. However, due to a fatal accident in the Paris-Madrid race in 1903, the French government banned open-road racing. In 1908, the legendary longest auto race took place from New York to Paris covering 22,000 miles with an American Thomas flyer winning the difficult competition.
Auto racing was usually done on horse racing tracks, but this trend changed with the construction of a 2.75 miles concrete track in Brooklands, England in 1907. Over the years, auto racing evolved and pure racers with streamlined bodies were introduced in the 1930s. On the other hand, the concept of stock car racing came into being with the formation of the National Association for Stock Car Auto racing (NASCAR) in 1948.
Currently, one of the most popular and thrilling form of auto racing is the Formula Racing with single-seater cars and open wheels especially designed for optimal racing and adhesiveness to the road. The most well-known championship in this form of racing is the Formula 1 racing and its series of races known as the Grand Prix are highly anticipated events with a major television audience.
