His name was Dr. James Naismith and he conceived this game to make his students exercise in gym during a rainy day of December, 1891. Initially, the peach basket had its bottom intact, but after every basket someone had to take out the ball, which was quite inconvenient so eventually the bottom was removed. Over time, the game went through fine changes such as metal hoops replacing peach baskets and black boards being placed behind the hoops by 1906. The immediately recognizable orange ball of basketball was introduced in the late 1950s.
As college basketball began in a YMCA school, it was initially propagated using its network. The game was quite interesting and novel so it spread rapidly and became especially popular in women’s high schools. Unfortunately, some harsh and rowdy players introduced rough play in the game that was against the healthy spirit, body, and mind principles of YMCA. This was a fortunate occurrence for the future of the game as it started becoming popular even faster than before when only YMCA was behind it.
