As a contrast to the harsh desert environment that surrounds the area, the city is teaming with life. Raphael Rivera was one of the first European visitors to the city. The city got its name from a group of Spaniards from the explorer Antonio Armijo's party. The city's prime source of water in the 1800s was wells. But now the city is a modern wonder in every sense of the word. With the legalization of gambling in 1931, the city hit its first jackpot. This was the city's first step towards become a haven for legal gambling because previously, most of the casinos were operated and owned by people like Meyer Lansky and Benjamin Bugsy Siegel and other mob figures. Howard Hughes and many others jumbled into this prolific business and with that, more and more legitimate corporations followed the route. That tremendously helped making Las Vegas the city it is today.
Some of the places in Las Vegas are almost as famous as the city itself. Four Queens, apart from all the quality entertainment it offers, is known for its slot machine which is also the biggest in the world. The biggest marquee in the whole world, The Mirage, is a stellar casino resort. Like all massive casinos, it is located outside the city, on the Las Vegas Strip, where it is almost always booze, gambling and never ending parties! Las Vegas is one place where you can place your bet on any team, any sport, at any time of the day or night. But as surprising as it might seem, Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world, has no major sporting team of its own. Las Vegas 51st is a minor league team based in the city.
This wild city, teeming with party animals, looks for reasons to celebrate. First Friday of every month is a party night where several exhibitions are also held in the Arts District.
