Based in Macon, Georgia, The Allman Brothers Band was founded by brothers Gregg Allman (vocalist, organist) and Duane Allman (slide guitarist, lead guitarist) in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969. Though the band concentrates on Southern rock, yet its symphonies heavily derive themes from blues-rock and hard rock. In their live performances, the band takes up instrumental songs and jam band-style innovations. They have been highly acclaimed by all quarters with George Kimball of Rolling Stone Magazine adjudging them "the best damn rock and roll band" of "the past five years. Between the period of 1971 and 2005, The Allman Brothers Band has secured five Platinum and eleven Gold albums. In 2004, they got ranked 52nd by Rolling Stones for all-time great artists in the top 100 list. The band is still active today.
The brothers Duane and Gregg Allman were raised in Florida, performing live music from the early 1960s. Initially, the band experimented a lot with their name. They started with a garage band "Escorts" in 1963 which was renamed Allman Joys two years later. Then they moved to Los Angeles where they called themselves The Hour Glass. Success was not immediate though and two albums released by them simply flopped in 1967 and 1968 on Liberty Records. The brothers then joined hands with a pro releasing an album 'Duane & Greg Allman' in 1972. Duane Allman has his own success story by becoming a prime guitarist for a renowned Studio in Alabama. He had the chance of working with such accomplished stars like King Curtis, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin and others.
The Allman Brothers Band released their self-titled debut album after performing live in the South. However, they were not able to fetch much market appeal for their blues-rock themes. The fans went crazy though with "Dreams" becoming a big hit which formed the basis of some of their live jams. A nationwide broadcast of one of their concerts on New Year's Eve in 1973 granted The Allman Brothers Band their desired glory. By 1975, some turmoil crept in the band when some differences arose amongst the members who now comprised of not just the brothers but other additions as well. However, the group broke up to be reformed again in 1978 releasing 'Enlightened Rogues' (1979).
In 1982, the group disbanded once again. Allman then went ahead forming the Gregg Allman Band with emphasis on concert tours. It was only in 1989 that The Allman Brothers Band revived their act and they have not left the scene ever since.
