English indie rock band from Sheffield, England, Arctic Monkeys, is the only band to have fastest selling debut album in the history of British music. This record was previously held by Oasis band’s debut album, Definitely Maybe. They are not only big names of the British indie rock scene, but they have also revolutionized the way records are marketed and promoted especially by new bands. They have become a ray of hope for all the upcoming bands by utilizing internet as the source of promoting and selling of their music. They have essentially diminished the importance of major record label companies.
The band members are, Matt Helders (backing vocals, percussion and drums), Nick O’Malley (backing vocals and bass guitar), Jamie Cook (backing vocals and rhythm guitar) and Alex Turner (lead guitar and vocals). In their formative years, the four performed locally in Sheffield and soon after started to record demos. A collection of their 17 songs appeared in 2003 under the title, Beneath the Boardwalk. These songs were given away sparingly at their concerts. They were uploaded by their ever increasing fans and the files started to be shared online. The word started to spread. It is both interesting and in a way ironic that the band which owes its popularity to internet, could not upload their songs and had not heard about MySpace.
In 2005, the band’s debut single, “Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys”, was released. It also featured “From the Ritz to the Rubble”, and “Fake Tales of San Francisco”. In order, to promote their debut single, Arctic Monkeys performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Although, these festivals are usually for lesser known bands, the Arctic Monkeys, due to publicity by BBC Radio and the tabloid press, attracted very large crowds. During the same year, the band signed up with a small record label, Domino. “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”, a single released under Domino, reached position no. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. Its successor, “When the Sun Goes Down”, too, topped the UK Singles Chart. The music industry at this moment realized that a band could be extremely successful even without the backing of a major record label.
In 2006, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, was released by Arctic Monkeys. It was their debut album. It sold well over 350,000 copies in its very first week of release. On its first day of release, the debut album sold well over 115,000 copies. As mentioned above, this album has left its mark, some say permanently, on the British music history. NME magazine classified this album as the “5th greatest British album of all time”.
In 2007, Favourite Worst Nightmare, was released. This album was not to be any different from its predecessor. It topped the UK Albums Chart. All of its singles were in Top 200 of the UK Singles Chart. The year after, Humbug, was released. The lyrics of this album were written while being inspired by the music of Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Nick Cave. Simon Harper, a music critic, while previewing the album and lead singer Alex Turner opined “Turner is his usual eloquent self, but has definitely graduated into an incomparable writer whose themes twist and turn through stories and allegories so potent and profound it actually leaves one breathless”.
Suck It and See, the band’s latest album was released recently. It, too, like other albums from Arctic Monkeys, is promised to be a chartbuster. Matter of fact, the band was so sure of its success that it allowed its fans to listen to the whole album before deciding to buy it. This is certainly a very unique approach adopted this band, as no other band would allow their fans to listen to the whole new upcoming album.
