When it comes to some of the most talented and finest Banjo players across the world, Bela Fleck’s name comes in the top spot. Fleck is highly recognized for his work along with the bands, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and New Grass Revival. Fleck’s skills and proficiency with the instrument is unmatched, and that is the reason why he is known to be the one of the most technical and inventive Banjo players all across the globe.
 
Bela Anton Leos Fleck hails from New York City, and had his interests embed in Banjo ever since he heard the theme of a TV Show “Beverly Hillbillies”, being played by Earl Scruggs. After receiving his first Banjo from his grandfather, Fleck started excelling with the instrument as the years passed along. Fleck’s name is comprised of the names of three famous composers that are: Bela Bartok, Anton Webern, and Leos Janacek. After discovering his flair for music, Fleck started learning Banjo under the supervision of Tony Trischka, and in the meantime he also got himself enrolled in High School of Music and Art in New York City. At the high school, Fleck studied French Horn. Bela Fleck had his first experience with the Blue Grass Composition after he released his debut solo album called Crossing the Tracks in 1979. Before doing so, Fleck played in Tasty Licks along with Mark Schatz, Pat Enright and Jack Tottle, after he moved to Boston.
 
In 1981, Fleck became a part of Spectrum: The Band along with Jimmy Gaudreau(mandolin), Glen Lawson(Vocalist/Guitarist) and Mark Schatz(bassist). Prior to forming a band, all of them used to play on the streets of Boston. After the band was formed, they toured in the same year the band was formed. Later that year, Fleck was asked to become a member of New Grass Revival by Sam Bush. He accepted the offer and remained with the band for coming nine years. During his years with New Grass Revival, he also focused on his solo career and released another solo album in that regard. The album was entitled “Drive”, and it received a Grammy nomination for the category of Best Bluegrass Album.
 
Fleck formed another band by the name of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones in 1988 along with Victor Wooten. Other members in the band’s lineup included Roy ‘Future Man’ Wooten on percussion, and Howard Levy, who played Harmonica and Keyboard. However in 1992, Levy parted ways from the band. Another addition to that band’s lineup was made in 1997 when Jeff Coffin joined the band as a part time saxophonist. However he turned from temporary to permanent band member in a short while. After joining the band, Left of Cool was the first album on which Coffin record alongside the other band members. As a member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Fleck has been nominee and a winner of Grammy Awards on several occasions.
 
Apart from Flecktones, Bela Fleck also worked on several other side projects. In 2005 he worked along with the traditional African musicians, while the band was on hiatus. During that hiatus period, Fleck also co-wrote a documentary film based on Flecktones called “Bring it Home”. He also worked with Abigail Washburn on her debut album called “Song of the Travelling Daughter”, as a co-producer.
 
In addition, Bela Fleck has also performed with a number of different musicians from various genres. Some of them include Ginger Baker, Phish, Dave Mathews Band and Tony Rice. Fleck is also known for Flecktones’ collaboration with Dave Mathews Band on a live concert. The collaboration resulted in the longest live song in the history of Dave Mathews Band, as it lasted for thirty two minutes and three seconds.
