A Winston-Salem, North Carolina, singer-songwriter, bandleader, arranger, composer and musician, Benjamin Scott “Ben” Folds, is a multi-instrumentalist, playing drums, bass guitar, guitar and piano. Formerly with an alternative rock band, Ben Folds Five, he presently has a very successful solo career. Folds, a household name not only in the US but in the rest of the world as well, especially, Great Britain and Australia, has released several commercially successful albums, appreciated both by his fans and critics.
Ben Folds started to play piano when he was nine years old. He played in several bands and groups as a drummer, bassist and pianist while still at high school. It could be said that his early influences were Billy Joel and Elton John. In 1980’s, Folds along with his old friend Millard Powers formed a band called, ‘Majosha’. The band produced and released several records, which were immensely popular in the local Winston-Salem music scene. The band also performed gigs at local clubs and bars and participated in Duke University’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ in 1988. Majosha won the competition, gaining ever more fame locally as a result. They released an EP, Party Night: Five Songs About Jesus. Interestingly the EP contained only four songs and none of them were about Jesus. In 1989, Majosha released another set of songs under the title, Shut Up and Listen to Majosha.
After having a successful career with Majosha, Ben Folds moved on and joined hands with Britt “Snuzz” Uzzell and Evan Olson to form “Pots and Pans”. Although the group lasted only for a month, Folds realized that he was better off musically with a solo career than in a group. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee and got a music publishing job. In the meantime, he played for several music bands like Mass Confusion, Jody’s Power Bill, The Semantics and others. After having a successful, albeit free-style music career in Nashville, Ben Folds moved back to his native, North Carolina and formed a band called Ben Folds Five.
Ben Folds Five was formed in 1994, which included in addition to Folds, Darren Jessee (drums) and Robert Sledge (bass guitar). It took the trio only a year to release their first album, Ben Folds Five. The success of the band’s debut album encouraged them to release Whatever and Ever Amen in 1997. This album, a huge commercial success contained one hit number after another. For example, it had memorable songs like “Battle of Who Could Care Less”, “Songs for the Dumped” and “Brick”. In 1998, the band released Naked Baby Photos, followed by another hit album, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, which was released in 1999. This was also their last album.
The albums, songs and the lyrics by Ben Folds Five were mainly about issues like humorous sarcasm, self-conflict, melancholy and depression, punctuated with profane language. After the breakup of the band, Folds again went back to his ever-successful solo career. He released Rockin’ the Suburbs in 2001. In order to promote his album, Folds undertook an extensive tour, in which he was joined by musicians like Jim Bogios, Britt “Snuzz” Uzzell and Millard Powers. Being a multi-instrumentalist, Ben Folds played almost all the instruments on this tour.
In 2009, Ben Folds was recognized for his exceptional music talent by NBC, when he was featured on the television channel’s music competition, The Sing Off, as a judge. He adjudicated the upcoming musical talent in the US along with musicians like Shawn Stockman and Nicole Scherzinger. In 2010, Ben Folds became a YouTube sensation when he featured in a video, “Ode To Merton”. One of his more recent albums, Lonely Avenue, was released in 2010 as well, in collaboration with another great musician, Nick Hornby. Folds, Hornby and Pomplamoose, released a music video recently, as well.
