The star being a versatile artist has won four Golden Globes, four Grammy Awards, three Emmy Awards, and a special Tony Award while also being nominated for two Academy Awards. Bette Midler rose from humble beginnings being the offspring of a house painter Fred Midler. It was actress Bette Davis that inspired her parents into naming her. While attending a high school in Honolulu, Bette Midler was adjudged "Most Talkative" in an election. Later on, she was declared "Most Dramatic" in her senior years. These traits later on paved way for her entry at the University of Hawaii in a drama class. She took part in the 1966 film 'Hawaii' as an extra in a small role of a seasick passenger.
The role in 'Hawaii' helped her financially to relocate to New York City in summer of 1965. The same year Bette Midler got her first major role in a play 'Miss Nefertiti Regrets and Cinderella Revisited' which was meant for children during the day and staged for adults in the night. By 1970, she took up singing in a bathhouse in the city where she formed association with Barry Manilow, her piano accompanist. He helped her launch her first album, 1972's The Divine Miss M. Afterwards she joined the Continental Baths where she developed a core following.
Bette Midler then pursued her acting career by starring in a production of 'The Who's rock opera Tommy'. At the same time, she was given a chance to appear on The Tonight Show. Her performance was awesome with the audience going crazy over her act which immediately propelled her career to new heights. She was one of the performers from USA for Africa's fund-raising single "We Are the World" while also participating in 'Live Aid' event at Philadelphia. In 1985 she entered a contract with Touchstone Pictures where she got a role in 'Down and Out in Beverly Hills' that launched a brilliant comedy acting career for her. In the same league, Bette Midler acted in films like 'Big Business' (1988), 'Ruthless People' (1986) and 'Outrageous Fortune' (1987) all of whom did great business at the box office.
Bette Midler main passion lies with singing though. Her recent work includes a new Christmas album 'Cool Yule' released in 2006. In between she keeps starring in films. She starred in the 2007 film 'Then She Found Me' along with Matthew Broderick. In June 2009, she made an appearance in the TV show "My Life on the D-List".
