Buddy Guy’s repute is gauged by two rankings as per the Rolling Stone magazine; 30th on the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time and 78th on the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time with the song Stone Crazy. But what is the story behind this musician of immense rapport? Buddy Guy was born on 30th July 1936 in Lettsworth, Louisiana. He began playing music and learning guitar on, of all things, a two string ‘diddley bow’ that he had constructed himself. He later on acquired an acoustic guitar from Harmony, a guitar that he later on donated decades after to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He began playing professionally in the 1950s with bands like the Baton Rouge and then moved on to live in Chicago in 1957.
It was in Chicago that he got his first record contract – as part of a competition with two guitarists from West Side, Magic Sam and Otis Rush. He then recorded for the label ‘Cobra Records’ as well as for Delmark Records with Junior Wells as Friendly Chap (the pseudonym he used). He recorded as the Friendly Chap from 1965 to 1966. unfortunately, Buddy Guy’s beginnings was actually held back in part due to his record company, Chess Records, and some of his rivals, who were jealous of his talent. In fact, Chess Records – Guy’s label from 1957 to 1968 – actually refused to record Buddy Guy’s own unique and novel style that reflected his on stage performances so much so that the label’s founder, Leonard Chess, made use of Buddy Guy as simply a session guitarist for acts like Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Sonny Boy – despite the fact that he had helped create and flourish the whole blues-rock scene. He even played on stage in the March 1969 Supershow that included acts like Led Zeppelin, Jack Bruce and Roland Kirk.
Buddy Guy is considered as a visionary alongside Jimmi Hendrix – both of whom were grossly overlooked while acts and musicians who followed them received all the fame and fortune. Buddy Guy’s career revived and flourished in the late 1980s, as part of the ’24 Nights’ all star blues lineup at the Royal Albert Hall, London. He was then signed onto Silverstone Records. He regularly tours nowadays and appears at various live shows despite his old age – and his music is as lively and unique as ever. Despite his music being characterized as Chicago blues, it is actually a genre in itself – a mix of both the most traditional and the most creative in blues, a style that is unpredictable yet extremely enjoyable for the blues fanatic. His style mixes rock, soul and jazz into music that is classic at its best, an experience that can never be forgotten.
Buddy Guy has won numerous awards – he has won a staggering 6 Grammy Awards for his music on electric and acoustic guitars as well as for his work in contemporary and traditional blues. He has received the fabled National Medal of Arts from the President of the USA, awarded to those who have made ‘extraordinary contributions to the creation, growth and support of arts in the US’. He has received the largest number of W.C Handy Awards of any artist, with 23 such awards bagged. Billboard magazine has awarded him the Century Award, making him one of the only two recipients of this award as well as the Greatest Living Electric Blues Guitarist title. To top it off, he is part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a musician who has influenced the likes of Jimi Hendrix.
