Their musical style is focused on alternative rock; however, they take heavy influence from other genres like hip-hop, funk, Mariachi and Iranian Folk Music at times, especially the trumpet solos. McCrea has, what is termed in the music production world as, ‘a deadpan voice’. The lyrics of the band have particularly been popular for the sarcasm they portray.
In 1991, McCrea, DiFiore, Frank French, Greg Brown and Sean McFessel formed Cake and through the years, the lineup has seen some changes. Nelson replaced Sean McFessel almost immediately after the band was formed. Cake’s first album was titled Motorcade of Generosity and the album was self-released. The band sold album themselves out on their tour van to cover up their expenses. The hard work and determination paid off when they were signed by Capricorn Records in 1995. The debut single Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle peaked at 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks.
Cake saw some more changes in their lineup and their second album was released. It was titled Fasion Nugget and although the whole album cannot be said to be great, the single The Distance managed to get the album Platinum certification. The band toured across the United States as well as abroad as fans familiarized themselves with Cake the band. Following the tour, band member Nelson, who had left the band prior to the second album release, joined the band again.
In 1998, the band came up with their third album, titled Prolonging the Magic. This was the last album with Capricorn Records. The album sold over a million copies and was certified platinum. It was a successful album overall but the band parted ways with Capricorn Records after that. The band toured extensively for Prolonging the Magic.
Cake signed a deal with Columbia Records for their fourth album. The album was recorded at the Paradise Studios and the Hyde Street Studios. Comfort Eagle was released in 2001. The album was one of their best works commercially and sold over twenty-two thousand in the first week. The band started touring across Canada, United States and Europe for this album in September. The single Short Skirt/Long Jacket peaked at number seven on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
In 2004, Pressure Chief was released and the album was the last of the two they released with Columbia Records. The album had mixed reviews however; mostly the critics enjoyed their album. Cake went on several tours for the promotion of this album. On one of these tours, they were accompanied by Tegan and Sara as well.
After Pressure Chief, the band created its own record label Upbeat Records. Cake went on for six years without any album releases but this was only the calm before the storm. In 2011, they released Showroom of Compassion and the album was good enough to peak at the Billboard Charts. It sold over forty-four thousand copies in the first week and this was twice as much as their previous album. The album had great reviews and the band is on tour for this album these days.
