Celtic Thunder is one act whose show people won't leave without ear-splitting grins etched across their faces. Keith Harkin is a talented guitarist, while the youngest member, Northern Ireland's Damian McGinty Jr., has been playing with Celtic Thunder since the age of 14. Chartered accountant Ryan Kelly completes the group. The recording of their inaugural Dublin performance became a chart-buster, & the band's three albums have been warmly received. Their fourth tour is scheduled for spring 2010, & if the response to the older tours is anything to go by, fans will be getting ready for one long celebration of Celtic traditional music.
Celtic Thunder basically produces songs reflecting traditional Celtic folk music, veering to the pop dance side in their performances. They have also ventured to include soft-rock & adult contemporary music in their performances. The group was the brainchild of Sharon Browne, who was helped in writing & arranging their performances by her partner Phil Coulter. In August 2007, the band performed their eclectic mix of songs to a packed Dublin City University Helix Theater. Recording of the show caught the media's attention, with the album spiraling to the top of the Billboard Top World Albums charts. It stayed there for 10 months, prompting widespread interest in the band that culminated in their appearance on the PBS Network.
From March 2008 onwards, Celtic Thunder has made 1200 televised appearances. After the eponymous debut album, & a second one by the name of Act Two, Celtic Thunder has enjoyed resounding success. The ensembles "Caledonia" & "Heartland" bring out the patriotic colors in stunning fashion, while "A Bird without Wings" by Damian & George remained a firm hit with the fans. Celtic Thunder's third offering Take Me Home went flying off the shelves upon release in July 2009, & has yielded the brilliant ensemble effort "Danny Boy". Celtic Thunder has the honor of opening New York City's St. Patrick's Day Parade, & also performed for the President's family later that day.
The choreography & lighting creates a fitting melodrama during their performances. The stage set recreates an ancient stone pathway from the proud Celtic folklore, & the rousing renditions accompanying the musical arrangement are in that unique Irish flavor. With three immensely popular tours, Celtic Thunder will undertake another tour in spring 2010 to rekindle the spirit.
