Cheap Trick was created in the year 1975 in Rockford, Illinois, America, by guitarist Rick Nielsen. Other members of the band include Bun E. Carlos on the percussion and drums, Tom Peterson on the backing vocals and bass guitar and Robin Zander on the rhythm guitars and lead vocals. Tom Peterson and Rick Nielsen had already been a part of a band called Fuse, but after the release of their first album, the band disintegrated. The duo then got together again and created Cheap Trick. Initially the group also had Randy Hogan as a member, but he was substituted by Robin Zander shortly after the inception of the band. The group was offered a recording deal by Epic soon after their formation, and they released their self-titled debut album in February of the year 1977. The album did not do well in the United States, but managed to earn them a fan following in Japan, where the record became a big success.
Cheap Trick went on several tours across the country after the release of their debut album performing around 150 shows in a year. They played as supporting acts for famous groups such as AC/DC, Kiss, Santana, Queen and Journey. The band released their second album later the same year. The album was named In Color, and the album gained them considerable success, both in and out of the United States. It managed to grab the 73rd spot on the US Pop Albums chart, and was placed on the 448th place on the list of 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stones magazine. Following the success of their sophomore album, the group released their third album, Heaven Tonight, in the year 1978. The album contained several hit numbers such as Surrender, which was ranked 62 on the US Top 100 Singles chart, while the album itself peaked at number 48 on the Pop Sales chart.
The following year, Cheap Trick released a live album, which was titled At Budokan. This was a commercial success and remained on the US Pop chart for more than a year, reaching the 4th spot and making it their most successful album. The album sold more than three million records worldwide. Their hit single I Want You to Want Me became their first song to hit the the US Top Ten chart, and the song Ain't That a Shame peaked at the 35th place on the US Pop Singles chart. Shortly afterward, the band issued their fourth studio album, which was named Dream Police. This album too became largely successful, producing two singles that reached the US Top Forty charts, including the main number, Voices, and selling more than a million records. On the 19th of June, 2007, a day was named after the band by the Senate of Illinois. According to the Senate Resolution 225, the 1st of April was marked as Cheap Trick Day in the entire state. This was a huge achievement for the band and they consider this a big honor.
