The Washington Post as Washington, DC’s “… most soulful export since Marvin Gaye.”, Clarence Greenwood, better known as Citizen Cope, is a self-taught musician, who plays folk-music and alternative rock. His music has been classified as a mixture of folk, blues and hip-hop. A multitalented Cope also plays drum, keyboard and guitar. He has had the honor of working with music greats like Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Nelly Furtado and Dido.
Lead vocalist, Cope is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He later moved to the nation’s capital, Washington DC, for his high school. Yet, again he moved to Brooklyn, New York, in search of a music career, but not before being a member of a hip-hop band, Basehead.
The very talented Cope was immediately signed by Capital Records, after listening to his demo tape. He recorded Shotguns under the Record, but the album was never released and he was dropped from the record deal in 1998. In 2000, he signed up with DreamWorks Records and his debut album Citizen Cope was released in 2002. In order to promote his debut album, Cope undertook an extensive tour schedule which included an opening for Nelly Furtado. He also performed at various festivals across the country, including the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, California.
The year 2002 was an extraordinary year for Citizen Cope in which he got to write and produce one of the tracks on Carlos Santana’s Shaman. “Sideways” was that track which was such a hit that it featured in several movies and television shows, both of national and international fame. “Sideways” was featured in an Italian film, Baciami Ancora. It also featured in “So You Think You Can Dance”. Earlier, it had featured in One Tree Hill, Ghost Town, Trust the Man, and one of the episodes of Scrubs. It also featured in Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz starring The Fountain.
In 2004, Cope released his second album, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings. The album was a huge commercial success, selling over 300,000 copies worldwide. Over 700,000 singles from the album were also downloaded. One of the single’s “Son’s Gonna Rise” enjoyed phenomenal success. The song featured in an HBO/Cinemax commercial, in a trailer for Sons of Anarchy, One Tree Hill, AXN Portugal commercial and in a Pontiac car commercial.
In 2006, Every Waking Moment, Citizen Cope’s third album was released. The album and one of its single’s “Let the Drummer Kick” enjoyed resounding success. Further, it featured in NBC’s Kingpin, Acura TSX commercial, HBO’s Entourage, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, CBS’s Cold Case, CSI:Miami, and in movies like Coach Carter and Accepted. The year 2008 kept Cope busy as he extensively toured all over North America, performing at more than 120 shows and selling over 100,000 tickets. This impressive statistics do not include the ticket sales from festivals and colleges. In 2010, Citizen Cope founded his own record label, RainWater Recordings. He released, Rainwater LP, under his own record label. To promote this album, Cope is currently undertaking a solo acoustic tour, across the length and breadth of the US.
