Clutch is a fantabulous band hailing from Germantown within the state of Maryland. This sensational band plays excellent rock music tuned with their own unique style and spiced up by their amazing musicians not to mention vocals that are second to none. This spectacular band’s first album was released in 1990 and was titled as Pitchfork 7, an EP. The band’s first album from the studio was the ear pleasing Transnational Speedway League, released in 1993. All in all, since its debut, Clutch has released around nine albums in the studio as well as a good number of live albums and special collections.
After coming together, members of Clutch began playing rock at various local venues in what are now legendary performances. Soon after, the band released its first single on seven inch vinyl, a single titled as Passive Restraints, Clutch was signed onto the record lavel, EastWest Records. The band then went on to release its first album, Transnational Speedway League in 1993 followed by the album, Clutch, in 1995. These first two Clutch albums spearheaded the band into the world of mainstream rock and it soon became a popular name with American fans of good rock.
By 1998, Clutch was riding the waves of popularity and thus was singed onto an even bigger label, Atlantic, through which it released the album The Elephant Riders followed by the energetic Pure Rock Fury in 2001. This album’s first single, Careful with that Mic, was released and soon became a sensational hit single. It was followed soon after by the hit singles, Open Up the Border and Immortal, all of which received good playtime on many radio stations all over the US. The band was then signed onto the record label, DRT Records, through which it released the album Blast Tyrant in 2004. This album was even more successful than the previous releases and rose even higher gaining Clutch more fans.
Blast Tyrant, Clutch’s 2004 album, was plated heavily on rock radio stations and the hit single, The Mob Goes Wild, was played a lot on the cable service, Music Choice, so much that a music video featuring Ryan Dunn, Don Vito and Brandon DiCamillo directed by Bam Margera, all of them belonging to the cast of Viva La Bam, was released. It was a very popular music video added to already being a hit single. Aside from its main rock albums, Clutch also released a number of other records. These include Jam Room, a groove album released in 2000 as well as Live at the Googolplex live album and Slow Hole to China, a special collection of rare tracks which were released in 2003.
Hardly a year passed and Clutch was back with the album Pitchfork & Lost Needles containing tracks from the Pitchfork 7 album released in 1990 and a number of unreleased songs. This album was also as phenomenal and as popular as previous albums. This album was followed by the albums From Beale Street to Oblivion and Robot Hive/Exodus, both featuring some new band members and producers. The album From Beale Street to Oblivion, released in 2007, was reviewed by Metal Hammer, a rock magazine, and described as a ‘future classic’ with overwhelming positive reviews. In fact, the magazine went so far as to call this album a contender for ‘album of the year’.
All in all, Clutch is a phenomenal band. Not only does it regularly release music, it also tours heavily. It is one of the few bands that plays more than one hundred shows a year, making up at least one show for every three days, tough work indeed! The band’s latest album is Strange Cousins from the West, released in 2009. The band is currently made up of Neil Fallon as the lead vocalist as well as playing the guitar and keyboards, Tim Sult as the lead guitarist, Dan Maines as the bassist, Jean-Paul Gaster as the drummer and Mick Schauer on keyboards.
