He got together with his thirteen year old neighbors, John and Chuck Panozzo and formed a band. The three-piece became a quartet after they added James Young in the band as a guitarist. Later, they also added John Curulewski in the group around the late 1960s and named themselves the Tradewinds. However, they changed the name of the group shortly afterward, this time naming themselves TW4 in the year 1968. This name did not satisfy them for long either, and the band became Styx in the year 1970. The group performed numerous times in school functions and other small venues, making their music more refined and professional. In the meanwhile, Dennis DeYoung worked on the side as a teacher in an elementary school in the southern suburbs of Chicago. He was a teacher of music in Springfield School in Midlothian, Illinois, until one of their songs, Lady, turned them into a national and then an international success.
Dennis DeYoung acted as the creative force behind various popular songs of the Styx. He was the writer, producer, accordion player, keyboardist and lead vocalist of the band and played a vital role in their success. He gradually became known as one of the most sought after keyboard players in rock music, despite the fact that he never got any formal training of the instrument. In January of the year 1981, he was featured in a Contemporary Keyboard magazine issue. The album gained a gold status in the year 1984 in Canada. DeYoung continues with his solo career, and issued his second album in the year 1986.
