Don McLean is known for his extraordinary singing and songwriting skills. He is a popular and a legendary folk artist who is famous all across the United States for his glorious folk songs. Don McLean was born on the 2^nd of October in the year 1945 in New Rochelle in New York. When he was a teenager, McLean started getting attracted towards folk music, especially the Weavers’ recording called “At Carnegie Hall” in 1955. Since childhood, he had been diagnosed as an asthma patient, which caused him to miss school for many days at a stretch and even though he was able to resume his studies every time, his keen interest and love for music was given the opportunity to grow. When he was 16 years old, he was able to buy his very first guitar.

Don McLean was known to often perform shows for his friends and family. At the same time he started exercising his PR skills in the music industry. He soon became friends with a folk singer named Erik Darling, who later on became a member of the Weavers. Don McLean experienced his first session in a studio when he was still in prep school with the singer Lisa Kindred. In the year 1963, he completed his graduation from the ‘Iona Preparatory School’. Then for a brief time period he attended the Villanova University. After he left Villanova, he associated himself with a very well known agent of folk music, Harold Leventhal and went on to perform at several events and venues for the subsequent 6 years of his life. At the same time he kept on studying by attending night classes at the Iona College and soon was able to receive his degree of bachelors in the subject of Business Administration in the year 1968. Don McLean even turned down the offer of a scholarship to continue his studies at the Columbia University Graduate School so that he could become a permanent singer at the Caffe Lena in New York City.

In the same year of his graduation, he received a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts. He used it to visit numerous towns and as a result reach out to a wider audience. At that time, Don McLean was lucky to have Pete Seeger as a friend. Seeger not only taught him the skill of how to perform but also acted as McLean’s mentor. During this particular time period, he started to write the songs which would later on become a part of his debut album called “Tapestry”.

Don McLean recorded his first ever album and gave it the name “Tapestry”, in the year 1969, in California at the time of the student riots. The album faced rejection from 34 labels before it was picked up and released by Mediarts. Although it was given great reviews, it was unable to get popularity beyond the folk circle. Don McLean is most famous for his second album called “American Pie”, which was released in the year 1971. It contained two of his most famous songs, “Vincent” and “American Pie”, which went on to become number 1 hits. This is when he suddenly became a mega star internationally, renewing everyone’s interest in his debut release so that it hit the charts almost a couple of years after it had initially released. The very popular Madonna released a cover version of his famous song “American Pie” twenty-nine years later.
Don McLean later on released his third album “The Pride Parade” and his fourth album “Playin’ Favorites”, which went on to be included in the top-40 in the UK. His success continued with his later albums ‘The Prime Time” and “Chain Lightening”, resulting in the international hit song “Crying” and other songs like “Since I Don’t Have You”.

Don McLean’s concerts are huge crowd pullers in overseas and America. His initial concerts earned critical acclaim in 1972 at the Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Albert Hall in London city. He mostly toured solo in the 1970s but now has his own band.
