Born in 1956 in Betsy Layne, Kentucky Yoakam parents move to Columbus, Ohio for a better future but he has maintained his link with his Kentucky roots. While in school, Yoakam took special interest in acting and music and stand out in both these fields. He didn’t complete his higher studies and left college to pursue a career in music in Los Angeles, California. Yoakam made a band and he experimented with his own developed country music genre called Honky Tonk music which is also referred to sometimes as “Hillbilly” music and started promoting it during the decade of 80’s.

He performed in different punk rock and rock clubs all over Los Angeles along with punk rock bands such as X, Los Lobos and The Blasters. Three studio albums of Dwight Yoakam have topped the US Country Charts namely Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc, Etc (1986), Hillbilly Deluxe(1987) and Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room (1988). These three albums were certified Platinum in US and Hillbilly Deluxe also certified Gold.  The next three albums of Yoakam again got response and the names were If There was a Way (#7 on US Country Charts), This Time (#4 on US Country) and Gone (#5 on US Country). These albums were certified multi platinum and Gold in US and Canada.
 
All his albums till the year 2000 were released by Reprise Records but now he is signed with New West Records. Blame the Vain was released in 2005 under this label. His first compilation album Just Lookin’ for a Hit that was released in 1989 is his most popular album till date and was certified Platinum. He also released a cover album in 2007 called Dwight Sings Buck which was at #11 both on US and Canadian Country Charts and was at #1 on US Independent Album list. Till date thirty singles of Yoakam have charted at different positions on Billboard Hot Country Songs charts list.
 
Dwight Yoakam is surely a man of diverse talents as he is not only a singer, musician and music producer but also a good actor. He has acted in movies like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sling Blade, Panic Room, Wedding Crashers, Bandidas, Crank, Four Christmases, Crank: High Voltage, Dirty Girl, The Last Rites of Ransom Pride and Bloodworth.
