With a sturdy bow in hand, she pulls the strings taut and takes a careful aim before releasing it. Her notes shoot out and fly with steely determination straight and true to her targets, piercing their hearts. Rather than this being an account of an archer a la Robin Hood, it is a depiction of the performance of one fiddling virtuoso Eileen Ivers. Her style of music belongs to a very niche genre of violin-playing that is known as ‘Irish Fiddling’, whose particular sound has been popularized by the performances of Riverdance. This theatrical ensemble of step-dancers and fiddlers is rooted in Irish-American culture and portrays its birth in Ireland as well as its transition to America through Irish immigrants.
 
Though being born in the Bronx, Eileen Ivers has strong Irish blood coursing through her veins, especially when it comes to belting out tunes from stringed instruments. Hardly having lost all her baby teeth, Eileen drew accolades for her musical prowess by clinching an “all-Ireland medal” in County Dongel for Banjo playing and then one for fiddling a year later at the age of ten. Annie, her mother, made it imperative for Eileen and her sister Maureen to be as immersed in Irish culture as possible. Hence, aside from mingling with other Irish families in the neighborhood, she took them on regular visits to Ireland. It was in one of these summer visits that Eileen expressed her affinity for the violin and took to it like an Irish farmer to potatoes and later found her mentor in Martin Mulvihill. In 1985, a twenty-year old Eileen Ivers became a founding member of Cherish The Ladies, an all-female Irish-American music band, along with fellow winner of the senior all-Ireland championship Joanie Madden.  
 
Eileen Ivers has built up a solid repertoire of delivering musical renditions, all with a simple four stringed instrument. Her impressive 30 all-Ireland titles include eight for solo fiddling, 6 for “slow air playing” and then a garnishing of duets, trios and banjo playing.  One of her traditional air pieces, “Lament For Stalker Wallace” was featured on the soundtrack of the 2002 martin Scorsese film Gangs Of New York, a historical drama depicting the conflict ridden lives of Irish-American immigrants in mid 19th century.   
 
Whilst relishing the musical life with ‘Cherish The Ladies’ from the mid eighties to the mid nineties, Eileen Ivers toured across a string of regions across the globe. All performances of the Ladies were embellished by step dancers with legwork in true Irish Dancing style.  After parting ways with the Ladies, Eileen joined the Riverdance orchestra, which though was dominated by the traditional Irish musicians of a former band “Moving Hearts”, was soon compelled to accept Eileen with fiddles wide open. At the turn of the century, she created a touring production to serve as a platform to showcase the musical repertoire of “Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul”. Over the next decade, this band of sorts has headlined performing art centers and music festivals all over, often collaborating with other symphonies, and making appearances on both national as well as international television.
 
Having displayed her brilliance tweaking and coaxing out fantastic tunes from her fiddle, Eileen Ivers accomplished another remarkable feat. She graduated with a magna cum laude degree in Mathematics from Iona College and the set her sights on working towards a post-graduate one. All throughout her ‘fiddling with music’, Eileen’s violins have shared the limelight. Her electric blue Barcus-Berry fiddle was even paid a tribute by her through the album Wild Blue. Keeping true to the blues, Eileen had another acoustic-electric fiddle custom made by ZETA Music Systems.
