Florence and the Machine is a band that was formed by the sensational Florence Welch. With her leading the line as the vocalist, arranger and song-writer, the group has gone on to become a rage in just five year since their debut. Florence, the brain behind Florence and the Machine was born at Camberwell, London on 28^th August 1986. She was a music fanatic from a very early age and used to sing during her school days. She first started to sing with her friend Isabella Summers who was also known as Machine. At Florence’s first ever gig she had to come up with a stage name which turned out to be Florence Robot/Isa Machine. The name was later trimmed to Florence and the Machine as we see it today. Her stints at various gigs in and around London started to attract attention which landed Welch a recording contract with a group called Ashok. Shortly afterwards she split up with Ashok and started to gather members to form her own band.
 
Florence and the Machine as a group made their debut with the release of the album, Lungs. It hit the music stores in the UK on 6^th July, 2009. A lot of the lyrics of the album were inspired by the breakup Welch had with her boyfriend. Lungs became an instant hit that announced the arrival of this sensational group in style. It went on to top charts in the UK and Ireland with more than one hundred thousand copies each sold in both countries in a month or so. The album’s launch in the US came on 25^th July, 2009 as a download and went straight to the number seventeen spot. After a little while that position on the charts improved as well as it could to make the album land the top spot. A proper physical U.S. release of Lungs came on 20^th October, 2009 under the banner of Universal Republic Records. On top of the success it enjoyed commercially, the album was a critical hit as well.  AllMusic and The Guardian gave it four stars while The A.V. Club rated it as A-. To top it all off the album also earned Florence and her band their first ever BRIT Award.
 
For the second album Florence and the Machine went back to the United Kingdom to do the recording. The album was titled Ceremonials and Welch wanted it to be darker and heavier than Lungs. The recording sessions started in January 2010 and went on for the entire year. Those sessions did have break while the group went on tours in between where Florence and the Machine tickets were sold to packed houses everywhere. By April, 2011 most of the work was done. The album finally came out on 28^th October, 2011 through Island Records and became a rage instantly. It went to the top on the UK Albums Chart in the first week and sold well over ninety four thousand copies in the first week alone. Ceremonials has since been certified Platinum by the BPI. The album also captured the top spots in Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. The performance in the U.S wasn’t too different either as it debuted on the Billboard 200 in sixth place whereas went top on several other charts. Critically it was very well received as well. Rolling Stone and Slant Magazine gave it four stars while it received four and half stars from AllMusic.
 
Florence and the Machine have garnered a lot of attention and acclaim for their music, all of which is totally justified. It has taken Florence and her group just half a decade to go pretty close to the pinnacle of the industry which in itself is nothing short of astonishing.
