He wanted to sign Gary straight away to the company because he knew all about his talents but his hands were tied due to certain restrictions in the company. Gary kept on working on his music and to earn some money started to sell cars. He had a demo tape that he left in one of the cars and luckily the vehicle was bought by a rich family. When they found out that Gary was the singer of the songs in that tape they sent him twelve thousand dollars as support. He went to Nashville with that money and recorded some songs from with Hill acting as his producer. The songs were liked by a lot of big labels but the first one to approach them was Decca Records. Gary signed for the company and started working on his first release.
His first released album under Decca Records was “Used for Sale” in 1996. The album got a mixed response and one of the songs “Her Man” broke into the top ten on charts. The second album “It Would Be You” was released in 1998 and the song “Judgement Day” went on to become a big hit, staying in the top ten songs for twenty one weeks. At the start of the next year Decca went bust and Gary Allan moved to the lable MCA Nashville. The next album titled “Smoke Rings in the Dark” was released later that year and it turned out to be his biggest success. It was a more complete album with more voice and made more use of different instruments. The album got Platinum certification from the RIAA.
Success continued to come his way with the release of his next two albums “Alright Guy” and See If I Care” respectively. “See If I Care” was an album which was inspired by his own attitude towards his music and songs. Gary had always held on to his beliefs about how his music should sound and never cared about outside pressures. This album was the culmination of those beliefs. His next album “Tough All Over” was a very emotional creation. His third wife Angela committed suicide a year before the release of this album and that shook him up. This album had songs like “I Just Got back from Hell” and “Puttin Memories Away” which were borne out of his own pain about the death of his wife. The album sold around one hundred thousand copies in the first seven days and headlined various charts everywhere. It also received Gold certification from the RIAA. Gary Allan followed it up with his albums “Greatest Hits”, “Living Hard” and “Get off the Pain” to a lot of rave reviews and critical acclaim with various songs from these albums going to the Top ten or better standings on various charts.
