Originally created by Glenn Miller in 1938, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was set up around a tenor saxophone for playing the melody, a clarinet and three more saxophones for playing the harmony. Since then, despite the disappearance of its founder, the orchestra has continued to perform and record led by several directors beginning in 1956, and carries on with its touring ventures till the present day. The touring band is currently led by trombonist Gary Tole. After Miller’s mysterious disappearance in 1944, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was re-arranged by Tex Beneke who was its lead tenor, singer, saxophonist and a longtime friend of Miller. As of 2011, the lineup of Glenn Miller Orchestra consists of Gary Tole, Brian Hemstock, Kevin Sheehan, Nigel Yancey, Walter Kross, Damian Sanchez, Ian O’Beirne, Ashley White, Nick Schroeder, Steve Walters, Reid Poole, George Reinert, Jaime Parker, John Tyler, Jason Bennett, Theron Brown, Holbrook Riles III, Kurt Kotheimer, Andrew LaBier, and the Moonlight Serenaders Vocal Group.

The group attracted the biggest dancing crowd in Syracuse, at the New York State Fair, in the history of the city. The following night, the band broke the record set by Guy Lombardo at its show in the Hershey Park Ballroom of Pennsylvania. The orchestra was then invited to perform by ASCAP at Carnegie Hall alongside three of the biggest acts including Benny Goodman, Fred Waring and Paul Whiteman.

At the start of 1940, Down Beat Magazine declared in the Sweet Band Poll section that Miller was on top of all the other bands. This sudden height of success and popularity was in part attributed to Moonlight Serenade, which was Miller’s radio series intended for Chesterfield cigarettes, and was aired thrice every week on CBS. By 1941, the band was on its way to Hollywood where it performed for its earliest movie called Sun Valley Serenade that brought in the song Chattanooga Choo Choo, which is known to have sold a million copies. With such huge commercial successes the band continued till way after Miller’s death, and today is known for its live performances and touring routine.
