Hot Tuna ventured towards the rocky shores and struck with First Pull Up and the Then Pull Down in 1972. These efforts paved way for Burgers (1972), The Phosphorescent Rat (1973) and Quah (1974). The last studio release marked the Jefferson Airplane’s exit from the Hot Tuna’s presiding domain. From here onwards Hot Tuna drove into the mainstream with releases like America's Choice (1975), Hoppkorv (1976), Double Dose (1978), and a compilation album Final Vinyl (1979). All these years the band remained consistent as a live act. Their studio efforts also received positive reviews; however, the line-up kept changing as the band looked for the most appropriate hands to tend to their blues. In the process, differences took hold and the band split after the release of the compilation.
The band’s rebirth did not come until another five years, where in the founders pursued solo projects. In 1984, both of the founders realized to reunite. Casady, Balin and Kantner from the Jefferson Airplane came KBC Band. Kaukonen’s guitar riffs and became more traditional, folk inspired, yet he remained loyal to his rock blue style. Two years of club performances brought these two together to perform in concerts of small scale; resulting in Splashdown (1984) and Historic Live Tuna (1985).
In 1990, the band resurfaced with a facelift Michael Falzarano joined the band and Pair a Dice Found was released. This studio record was a treat for Hot Tuna fans; it presented a very mature yet strong command over acoustic blues. The next decade was all about grand touring. The band extended its outreach staging one show after the other, compiling live and studio albums. These included hits and favorites: Live at Sweetwater Two (1993), In a Can (1996), Classic Hot Tuna Acoustic (1996), Classic Hot Tuna Electric (1996), The Best of Hot Tuna (1998), And Furthermore... (1999) and Live At New Orleans House Berkeley, CA 09/69 (2010) .
