Some performances simply entertain you, but a few leave a permanent impression on your mind with their artistic skills and close-to-reality nature, like the musical In the Heights. It is sure to leave you stunned with its magical characters and life like storyline.
A musical presenting hip hop, merengue, salsa and soul music, In the Heights is based on a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes. Its music and lyrics are given by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and its story features three days from lives of its characters living in Washington Heights, a neighborhood in New York City Dominican-American and Nuyorican areas. It was written by Miranda in 1999 for the first time when he was a college student. A student theatre company named The Second Stage from Wesleyan University accepted it, after which Miranda added some more features to the musical. After running successfully for two days, Miranda was approached by his seniors who offered him to extend the play to Broadway. The show was finally brought to Broadway in 2008, while it’s several versions played in theatres in Connecticut and other cities.
The play opens with its first act showing a bodega in a neighborhood of Washington Heights, where bodega owner named Usnavi serves coffee and papers to his customers. There are characters of Nina, a student whose parents are desperate for money to bear the expenses of her education and who is in love with Usnavi, Benny, an employee in a taxi service owned by Nina’s father Kevin, Venessa from a hair salon in the street who is also pressed for money. Later on, Usnavi comes to know that he has just sold a lottery ticket worth $96,000. Everyone on the block wishes to have the ticket before Abuela Claudia reveals that she has it.
At dinner, Nina’s father tells everyone that he has sold his car to pay for Nina’s education, and everyone is annoyed to hear that, and Benny is angry as this decision has put him out of job. Nina and Benny later go to a dance club where Venessa and Usnavi also join them, they all dance while the power goes off turning it into a blackout where Sonny and Graffiti Pete create a firework show. The act closes with Nina and Benny kissing each other with fireworks in the background.
In act two, Nina and Benny get up after spending the night together while Nina’s parents have been looking for them, and on finding out the truth, Kevin goes mad on Nina telling her that Benny will never be a part of their family as he is not a Latino. Usnavi’s shop has been looted, and he decides to leave for Dominican Republic for ever. Daniela closes down her salon, and Abuela Claudia dies. The entire neighborhood decides to celebrate in front of bodega for one last time. They all gather, and recall old memories, remembering Abuela. From Abuela’s belongings, Nina discovers old photos from her graduation, and decides to listen to his father and continue her education at Stanford.
When Usnavi gets up the next morning, he sees all shops in the block being closed one after the other. Daniela’s salon, Kevin’s car service and now his bodega all are closing down. Sonny completes a memorial for Abuela Claudia on bodega’s grate, and shows it to everyone. Usnavi decides to stay as he has changed his mind and believes that this neighborhood is where he belongs.
