She worked as a tour guide, a proofreader and a writer at one of the advertising agencies and then finally as a fashion consultant at Bond Clothing Stores. It was at the Bond Store that she met Tony Rivers who suggested a change in her name and made her Joan Rivers that we all know. It was this change in the name that a change is fortune took place and she discovered the skills hidden way beneath her outer self.
 
Her early appearance was in a short play where she played the role of a lesbian but later she performed at a stage in Chicago. In 1960’s she performed at various comedy clubs located in the vicinity of New York and then finally she made an appalling entry at the TV program The Tonight Show. The super hit comedy show Candid Camera which was televised in 1965 gave a good platform to Rivers to attract the people into ridiculous situations. Thus the journey towards spreading laughter and smiles began thereafter. In 70’s Rivers could be spotted at numerous comedy and variety shows like Hollywood Squares, The Adventures of Letterman and The Carol Burnett Show.
