Colombian heavy metal singer and songwriter Juanes was born on August 9, 1972. His real name is Juan Esteban Aristizabal Vasquez, and he belongs to Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia. Having been a member of a heavy metal band Ekhymosis, he is now famous for his solo music as well as humanitarian efforts.

Juanes learned to play guitar at the age of seven from his father and brothers before his father succumbed to cancer. When he was a child, Colombia was going through the tyrannous reign of notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. His cousin and a close friend were also taken down by gunmen during that era of bloodshed, incidents that left a great impression on his soul. Feeling sick of that violence, Juanes always dreamed of his homeland free from that brutality and drugs, and decided to devote his life to spread love and peace.

He discovered his musical abilities as a teenager and formed a hard rock band named Ekhymosis. He was greatly influenced by popular metal bands of that time like Metallica. In 1988 the band released their debut album named Nino Gigante. First album received good response from the public, and encouraged the artist to pursue further career in music. The band continued to sing together for 10 years before being disbanded in 1998, as Juanes believed it was too local and could not manage to become famous on international stage. Five studio albums were released by the band, and it had many associated acts along with other famous artists on its credit, including those with Ricky Martin, Aterciopelados and Alejandro Sanz.

Juanes released his first solo album in 2002 titled Un Dia Normal that gained remarkable success in Latin American music market. This pushed Juanes’ career a kick start, thus establishing him as a new Spanish music sensation. The album remained among top ten for over 92 weeks among Billboard’s Top Latin Albums charts, setting a record for one of the longest stays. It was certified Gold and Platinum by RIAA for its sales across Colombia and the USA.

In September 2004 he released his next album named Mi Sangre, an album that reached number one on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums charts soon after its launch. It stayed there for over 6 months, and most of the songs from this album gained popularity among masses individually. Many singles by Juanes were released after that album, and he performed on many grand events like Grammy’s, FIFA world cup 2006 final draw evening and Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Some of his songs also faced controversies by different political groups across the world, but none could become significant enough to bring down his popularity.

Another aspect of Juanes’ personality has been humanitarian activism. He drew his inspiration for this work from his childhood, when he saw much violence and bloodshed in Colombia and always wanted to make a difference. He founded Mi Sangre foundation as an effort against anti personnel mines in Colombia. His foundation has been working to increase awareness against landmines across the world, as well as for fund raising to remove mines from Colombia. He also performed at many important international events and emphasized on discouraging use of land mines all over the world. Many important personalities around the world have praised him for his endeavors and joined him in this noble task, including French Culture Minister, members of European Parliament and Colombian Prime Minister Alvaro Uribe. He has also been nominated among one of the 100 most influential people of the world by Time magazine. His music has also won him seven Latin Grammys, one Grammys and a BMI President’s Award in 2010.
