In 1993, he had become one of the foremost pianists at this institute and it was no surprise that he won the Xing Hai Cup Piano Competition held in Beijing.
In just a year, in 1994, Lang Lang had risen to international fame. He won the first prize at the International Competition for Young Pianists held in Ettlingen in Germany. This was the fourth such competition and he was recognized for his Outstanding Artistic Performance when he was just twelve years old. In 1995, while just thirteen years old, he performed the Chopin composition Op. 10 and Op. 25 at the Beijing Concert Hall and followed this up with winning the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians held in Japan as the first position holder. He then performed another Chopin composition alongwith the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra which was broadcast on NHK Television. Thus, at just an age of fourteen, he was winning international pianist competitions and performing live at some of the greatest classical music venues in the world with the best known orchestra companies.
Soon after, Lang Lang’s performances were sold out and he appeared in the world’s greatest cities. He was engaged with orchestra companies such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. He was reviewed by the Chicago Tribune as the biggest most exciting young pianist. He was praised by NPR and The Times, which reviews him as the only classical artist to have achieved such fame without dumbing down his performance. He was ranked by the Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world and reviewed by The New York Times, The New Yorker and The Washington Post.
