Lynn came to prominence at the time when Patsy Cline, Skeeter Davis, & Jean Shepard were considered the only three women to have made it to the upper echelons of the music industry. Lynn was born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky to a father who was a coal miner & storekeeper. She sang at local churches & concerts, & in January 1949 (at the age of 13) was married off to Oliver Lynn. Lynn bore six children & developed a habit of singing to them in the house. Her husband bought her a guitar as an anniversary present after a decade of motherhood, & she taught herself to play it. She eventually reached a contract with Decca Records, with whom her partnership began bearing fruit over the early 60s. Mentored by the legendary Patsy Cline, Lynn scored a stream of Top Ten hits before her honky-tonk style gave way to more mature songwriting about political & social subjects. Starting form 1966, she finally began hitting the top of the charts on a regular basis with her subjects varying from criticism of philandering husbands, to birth control awareness, to commentary on Vietnam War policies. She formed an incredibly successful duo from 1971 to 1975 with Conway Twitty, and continued her bold songwriting till country took a different pop-influenced look in the early 80s. She did have a string of solo hits till 1988 before she was widowed in 1996. Recovering from the heartbreak, Van Lear Rose gave her a roaring comeback in the previous decade.
 
Loretta Lynn has released 54 studio albums with another 15 compilation albums over the course of her glittering career. After “Success” became her first Top Ten single in 1962, she released seven further Top Tens before notching up her first career #1 with “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’”, inspired from her personal experiences. “Dear Uncle Sam” recounted a mourning widow’s account of her husband’s death in Vietnam service. The 60s saw two further #1s, before a couple of highly acclaimed collaborative albums with Ernest Tubbs. She then began her ten-year productive partnership with Twitty, seeing ten albums & five #1s, including “Lead Me On” & “Feelin’s”. Her social awareness saw “Rated X” (about divorced women’s stigma) & “The Pill” (about birth control) top charts before “Out of My Head & into My Bed” became her sixteenth & final #1. She has eight Gold albums & four Grammys, & became a CMA Hall of Famer in 1988.
