Founded in Florida in 1964, Lynyrd Skynyrd is a rock band that gained popularity in the Southern USA in 1973. The band rose to heights of fame the world over very quickly but fate's cruel hands snatched the lives of three members due to an airplane crash in 1977. Tragedy didn't stop the other members from reforming the band in 1987 when Johnny, the younger brother of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant stepped in the front. In March 2006, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while Gary Rossington is the only original member who remains with the band.
Three teenagers founded the band "The Noble Five" in 1964 which was later on renamed "My Backyard" in 1965. They were later on joined by two more members. At the beginning their music contained traces of influences by famous rock bands like The Yardbirds, The Beatles, Free and The Rolling Stones. Country & western music also impacted their tunes besides the shades of Southern blues. Year 1968 proved heartening for them as they swept away a native Battle of the Bands contest as the winners. Opening slots on numerous Southeast shows were also made available to them.
Roadie Billy Powell joined the group in 1970 as the keyboardist. At this point, the names "One Percent" and "The Noble Five" were devised before the title "Leonard Skinnerd" was considered. The group gave performances throughout the South in the early 1970s and carved their niche as a hard-driving, blues-rock band. When Alan Walden joined the group as their manager in 1970, the group turned more aggressive in its approach. In 1972 the band was finally renamed Lynyrd Skynyrd and were signed with MCA Records where they released their first album which contained the hit number "Free Bird" that occupied #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and is still reckoned as a top hit today.
