Metallica a name that is known to all music lovers is a heavy metal band with their origin from Los Angeles, California, United States. The genres of music they have produced since the beginning of their career in 1981 are heavy metal, thrash metal, hard rock and speed metal. The active members of the band are James Hetfield who is on the rhythm guitar and the lead vocalist, Lars Ulrich who is on drums and percussion, Kirk Hammett the lead guitarist and doing the backing vocals and Robert Trujillo the bass guitarist and also doing backing vocals.

Metallica was formed as a result of advertisement placed by the drummer Lars Ulrich in a Los Angeles newspaper 'The Recycler' for the metal musicians. He was teamed up with James Hetfield to find the other members of the band. The name of the band was incorporated when Ron Quintana a friend of Ulrich suggested two names Metal Mania and Metallica. After a long search and the change of various bass guitarists in 1983 Metallica released their first album 'Kill 'Em All' previously named as Metal up your Ass. The album reached on number 120 position on Billboard 200. The second studio album of the band was released in 1984 titled as 'Ride the Lightening' and climbed the 100 position on Billboard 200. The singles like 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', 'Fade to Black' and 'Creeping Death' belonged to this album. In the March of year 1986 Metallica released its third studio album titled 'Master of Puppets'. The album gained 29th position on the Billboard 200 and spent 72 weeks on the chart. In 1986 the album was certified as gold and lately in 2003 it was certified as six times platinum.

In 1986 during the month of September Metallica lost one of its members Cliff Burton in an accident, this led the band in grief and sorrow. After the mourning of its lost member the band decided to find a replacement and Jason Newsted was found. During this time the band released an all-covers EP titled 'The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited' in August of 1987. Since after the death of Burton the first studio album released by Metallica was '... And Justice for All', in the year 1988. The album gained sixth position on the Billboard 200 and was certified as platinum till nine weeks after its release.

The next album released by Metallica brought them to the lime light as it sold 650,000 copies in the first week of its release making it the 26th highest selling album in United States. The title of the album was 'Metallica' and it gained number one position at Billboard 200 and has been certified 15 times platinum. After three years of break the band started recording its sixth studio album which was released in 1996 titled as 'Load' and reached number one on Billboard 200 and ARIA Charts. The half material of the production was released as another album named 'ReLoad'. In 1998 it was followed by a double album of cover songs titled as Garage Inc.

In the year 2003 during the month of June Metallica released its eighth studio album titled as St. Anger which gained the position of number one on the Billboard 200. During the production the band member Jason Newsted was replaced by Robert Trujillo. During the years 2006 and 2007 a DVD titled 'The Videos 1989 - 2004' and a tribute album titled We All Love Ennio Morricone was respectively released. In September of 2008 Metallica released its album 'Death Magnet' that reached top position on the Australian, Canadian, Mexican and European album chart. It sold 490,000 copies in United States only and reached number one at Billboard 200. Metallica became the first band to have five albums to reach number one at Billboard 200 repeatedly.
