Opeth was formed in 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden. The main brain behind the formation of this band was singer David Isberg. He asked gifted guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt to join the band who was in his mid teens at that time. The name of the band was taken from a book of a famous author. Both Akerfeldt and Isberg asked Anders Nordin to join as a drummer. Two more musicians joined on bass and guitar but owing to the slow progress of the band they soon left. In 1992 founder member Isberg also left and and the band became a trio of Nordin, Akerfeldt and bassist Peter Lindgren. Initially the band was focusing purely on power metal and death metal but soon started shifting towards developing a more melodic sound with incorporation of acoustic guitars and harmonies. This change proved to be a good one and went on to become the signature music sound of the band. Opeth focuses on genres like progressive rock, progressive metal and progressive death metal.
Throughout their career, the band has been associated with labels like Century Black, Candlelight, Koch records but since 2005 Opeth is associated with Roadrunner Records. Over the years the group has undergone a number of lineup changes with Akerfeldt being the main driving force and only founding member. The current lineup consists of Akerfeldt on vocals and rhythm guitars, Martin Mendez on bass, Martin Axe on drums, Fredrik Akesson on lead guitars and Joakim Svalbergon synthesizers and keyboards.
The debut album of Opeth was titled Orchid that was released by Candlelight Records in 1995. This was the only album that the band released through this label. The very next year Century Media released Morningrise that was the second album of Opeth. The same label released My Arms Your Hearse in 1998. During the period from 1999 till 2002 the band managed to release to three more studio albums namely Still Life, Blackwater Park and Deliverance. Interesting thing to note is that despite receiving positive reviews from both critics and fans, none of these albums charted.
Major recognition came to Opeth when they signed with world renowned metal and hard rock recording company Roadrunner Records. Damnation was the first album that was released through this label in 2003. This was the first ever album by Opeth that managed to chart in countries like UK, US, Netherland, France and Finland. It was followed by three more hit albums namely Ghost Reveries, Watershed and Heritage. Released in 2011 Heritage till date remains the latest album by the group, it is also the highest charting album by the band. It entered the charts at #4 in Sweden, #9 in Germany, #13 on Swiss and #19 on US Billboard.
