Phillip Chapman Lesh is a musician who is also a responsible for founding the Grateful Dead, with whom he played bass guitar for thirty years.He was born on March 15, 1940 in Berkley, California.In 1995 the band, Grateful Dead was disbanded, yet Lesh continued playing Grateful Dead Family music tradition, while having Phil Lesh and Friends as a side Project.
Phil Lesh and Friends pays homage to the Dead's music by playing their common covers, playing their originals and songs sung by members of this band. Over the years, Phil and friends has come to be known as the premier post-Dead band and many fans view it as such.
Phil Lesh has been apprentice to notable personalities like Bob Hansen and the Italian Modernist Luciano Berio and Tom Constanten who would in the future serve to be Dead's keyboardist. During student life, he met Jerry Garcia and both became very good friends.
Soon, Jerry talked to him and requested him to become the Bass Guitarist for his rock group Warlocks which was later renamed as Grateful Dead. Lesh never had formal training in Bass guitar.He started out as violin player at high school and later switched to trumpet.However, Lesh proved an innovator in the 1960's as far as his new role of the electric bass is concerned.
He adopted a more contrapuntal and melodic approach, whereas earlier on rock bass players had to stay within the beat of the song.In many of Dead's rock jams, it is observed that Lesh's bash is a lead Instrument along with Garcia's guitar.
Some of the songs that he had composed and sung were extremely popular like "Box of Rain" and "Unbroken Chain" "Pride of Cucamonga" and "New Potato Caboose." His high tenor voice contributed the maximum in the band's four-part harmony section, catapulting this rock band to new heights of stardom and fame. Phil Lesh did a guest voice in the comedy series "Lil' Bush" in the second season episode, Big Pharm.
In 1998 Lesh had to get a liver transplant because it had been affected badly by hepatitis C and after the implant Lesh started encouraging people to become organ donors during his performances. Tracks such as "Donor Rap" are examples of his appreciation for organ donors. He was also diagnosed by prostate cancer in November 2006 and had undergone a surgery and gotten it removed in Dec, 2006.
