The Matador then toured in Detroit arenas to display their talent and thus attains recognition too.
After the end of high school studies, Robinson enrolled himself in college but he met Berry Gordy, the noted songwriter and thus made an effort to pursue his musical career. The group renamed itself as the Miracles and formally began their career in music by composing a single Got a Job which was an answer to Get a Job, a top rated single by Silhouettes’. Robinson was not an ordinary person and he had a vision to produce something beyond the ordinary stuff. Thus he made up his mind to form a record label. Thus in 1959 the Tamla Records was founded which was later emerged in Motown while The Miracles were the first one to sign with the label. The classic chemistry of both Robinson and Gordy struck so well that Motown nurtured like anything. In 60’s Motown first ever hit single Shop Around soared as number one hit on R&B singles chart and was the million-selling single of Motown. Hit singles from The Miracles earned him great deal of name and fame; so much that he was given the title of America’s poet laureate of love. Over 4,000 songs are to the credit of Robinson which is a matter of immense pride for a singer with a 50-year career.
Eventually Robinson made a deal to go away with the Miracles and start his own career. Thus in 1972, Smokey said farewell to the band even it was making a million sale record of its singles. Robinson made a plan to start his solo career while still focusing on Motown as the vice president. Releasing his first single Smokey in 1973, Smokey surprised everyone with his number one R&B hit released in 1975. Smokey suffered through cocaine addiction during the mid-1980 but after the treatment he recovered from it and with a rejuvenated spirit joined the career again. During this time of revival Smokey attained Grammy award for his two singles, while Robinson was also included as a solo artist in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 1988, Robinson’s Motown was sold to MCA and eventually he decided to resign from his vice president post. The last album Love, Smokey released in 1990 under the banner of Motown won marvelous fame to him once again and thus Robinson left Motown forever. Robinson was greatly recognized for his endeavors in the music field and thus he was awarded with the Soul Train Music Award for Career Achievement. After the lapse of eight years when Motown was the tertiary branch of Universal Music Group, Robinson returned back and released Intimate in 1999.
In the honor of Smokey Robinson’s music productions and to commemorate his efforts in this field, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award was given to him and later National Medal of Arts too, in 2002.
