Soundgarden, are one of the biggest names in grunge music who have sold millions of record around the world. For almost three odd decades they have been one of the most prominent groups to have made their name in the industry. The origins of Soundgarden can be traced all the way back to the mid 1980’s to the days of another band named The Shemps. That group used to play in and around Seattle with members Chris Cornell and Hiro Yamamoto being the major players. Yamamoto quit the band and was replaced by his friend Kim Thayil as the bassist. The Shemps ceased to exist shortly afterwards but Chris, Hiro and Kim kept formed another band in 1984 and named it Soundgarden. Scott Sundquist then hopped on as the drummer. After performing for a year or so in and around Seattle, Scott left the band due to family reasons and was duly replaced by Matt Cameron. The talents Soundgarden possessed were recognized by Jonathan Poneman who was so impressed by what the group had to offer that he paid them twenty thousand dollars to work on their debut release. The result was the song Hunted Down that came out in 1987.
 
Soundgarden released then went on to sign for the record label SST Records and released their debut album Ultramega OK on 31^st October, 1988. The album received a lot of critical acclaim and the group followed that up by going on their first national and European tour. The icing on the cake came when the album was nominated for a Grammy. Soundgarden then went and signed for A&M Records and got to work on their next album which was titled Louder Than Love. The album received a lot of critical praise on its release and once again followed that up with a tour of North America and Europe. Their third album was titled Badmotorfinger and it hit the music stores on 8^th October, 1991. The album was a lot more focused on the prevalent Seattle grunge music which helped a lot in the album getting certified two times platinum and a Grammy nomination.
 
After a lot of major tours and collaborations post Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden settles on working on the next major album which was titled Superunknown. The album turned out to be the kind of hit the band was looking for. Released on 8^th March, 1994 it became an instant rage that debuted on the top spot on the Billboard 200. Tracks like Spoonman, Black Hole Sun, Fell on Black Days and My Wave showcased the creativity and the evolution in the band’s music. Critics and fans went crazy everywhere and Soundgarden earned not one but two Grammys for the sensation they had created with Superunknown. It also won an MTV Video Music Award for the song Black Hole Sun and received a five times platinum certification in the U.S. Tours of U.S., Europe and Asia followed where Soundgarden tickets were bought by fans everywhere to make every tour an immense success. Down on the Upside became the group’s next release. It was a detour from their previous creations with the music and lyrics being much lighter than before. The change in style was appreciated by the fans and critics alike and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
 
Soundgarden went on a hiatus soon afterwards that ended in 2010 when the members got back together again. The reunion was celebrated by releasing some old and newer versions of some previous tracks. The group has announced they are working on their next album and have embarked on a very special tour as well.
