It is often said that slow and steady wins the race and we see it coming true in case of Steve Miller Band who started humbly with not much of people appreciating their music, but now continues to be one of the best selling rock performers of the world.
San Francisco, California based American rock band named the Steve Miller Band was formed in 1967. Steve Miller himself is the lead singer as well as the guitarist for the band, while others include Sonny Charles, Joseph Wooten, Gordy Knudtson, Kenny Lee Lewis and Max Marshall. Miller met Barry Goldberg in 1965 when the two decided to form a band named Goldberg-Miller Blues Band. They were later on joined by Craymore Stevens, Lance Haas and Shawn Yoder and the band was based in Chicago. The band earned some recognition in the area and began performing at some local clubs soon.
It was not very late with Goldberg – Miller Blues band that Miller decided to quit and proceeded to San Francisco as he found himself more interested in Psychedelic music which was on a rise there. Steve Miller Blues Band, that was later given a shorter name of Steve Miller Band, was founded at that time. Miller was joined by Lonnie Turner on Bass, Tim Davis on drums and James Cooke on guitars. The debut album released by the newly formed band was named Children of the Future that was released in 1968. Unfortunately, the album could not manage to receive the expected response. Nevertheless, the band did not lose hope and continued struggling, releasing their second album titled Sailors in October the same year. It did a better business, and reached number 24 on Billboard charts.
The band had a steadily increasing popularity with its subsequent albums and received better and better reviews with every new release. Third album titled Brave New World was released in 1969, followed shortly by Your Saving Grace and Number 5 the next year. The newer work by the band was appreciated by the public, evident by increasing attendance over their concerts.
The band leader Steve Miller had an accident in 1971 and had a serious neck injury. It interrupted the band’s activities briefly, but their previously completed album titled Rock Love was released the same year. It was a critically and commercially acclaimed album, and despite the difficulties in its promotion by the band due to Miller’s injury, the album did a great business. The album also featured a song Kim, Come and Play the Drum that was written specifically for the band’s drummer Kim Kopko.
Steve Miller Band released their next album Recall the Beginning … A Journey from Eden the next year, while Anthrology was released in 1972. The subsequent albums included Living in the U. S. A, The Joker, Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams released in 1973, 1973, 1976 and 1977 respectively. By that time, Steve and his band were enjoying a good fan following, and they had been recognized greatly by the music lovers. Their music was being considered by the critics as quality work, and it was for this reason that they decided to release a greatest hits album. It was released the next year, and featured the most popular songs by the band between years 1974 and 1978. The Greatest Hits album was a huge commercial success, selling over 13 million copies worldwide. It was after the release of this album that the concerts Steve Miller Band performed at began getting all sold out, and their popularity spread like wild fire.
The band released many albums later, each getting a better response than previous ones.
