Three times Grammy Award winner, The Black Keys is in your town to enthrall you with blues-rock music. The band, which came into being in 2001, originally hails from Akron, Ohio. Interestingly, this very successful band has only two members; Dan Auerbach (vocalist and guitarist) and Patrick Carney (drummer and producer). There is a very interesting story behind how the two adopted this name for their band. The two, while on National Public Radio’s program, Fresh Air, said that a psychotic artist would leave strange messages on their answering machines, referring to the father of Auerbach and Carney as “black keys”.
The Blacks Keys debut album was The Big Come Up which was released in 2002. This album was a huge success for this startup band and a great source of encouragement for the two. Like most of the new bands, The Black Keys were short on money, so the album was recorded in Carney’s basement and interestingly on a 8-track tape recorder. One of the singles from the album, “I’ll Be Your Man” became the theme song for HBO’s Hung. Another single, “Breaks” was in a film RocknRolla’. In addition, another two songs, “Leavin’ Trunk”, a traditional blues song and “She Said, She Said”, originally sung by The Beatles, were released in the form of an EP.
Thickfreakness which was released in 2003 was their second album. This album had the critics raving. “Set You Free”, a single from the album was used as a soundtrack for School of Rock and I Love You, Man, a comedy. The band also released an EP under the title The Six Parts Seven/The Black Keys EP.
In 2004, Rubber Factory was released as the band’s third album. This album was actually recorded in an abandoned factory. “When the Lights Go Out” was used in the promotional trailer of the movie, Black Snake Moan. Another single from the album “10 A.M. Automatic” was used in an American Express commercial, Live Free or Die, and The Go Getter. “Grown So Ugly” was featured in Cloverfield. In 2005, the band released their very first live video album, Live. In 2006 came their second live video album, Live in Austin, TX. This album is also known as Thickfreakness in Austin.
The Black Keys fourth album was Magic Potion which too was released in 2006. “Your Touch”, a single from the album, was featured in Zombieland, a movie. The same song was also featured in HBO’s Eastbound & Down.
The fifth album from the band was Attack & Release which was released in 2008. The album was a huge success, climbing to no. 14 on the Billboard 200. “Strange Times” a single, was featured in video games like NASCAR 09 and Grand Theft Auto IV. “I Got Mine” was ranked 23rd best song out of 100 best songs of 2008 by Rolling Stone magazine. Another single, “So He Won’t Break” was used in one of the episodes of One Tree Hill. In 2009, the two members of the band pursued their own solo careers. Auerbach released his album Keep It Hid. Carney, started his own indie band called Drummer, which released their own album Feel Good Together. But the two got back together again for their latest album Brothers.
Brothers, to date, has been the sixth and the latest album of The Black Keys, which was released in 2010. This album was so successful that it climbed to no. 3 on the Billboard Albums Chart. It also sold over 73,000 copies in its first week of release. One of the singles from the album “Tighten Up” was the top most song on the US Alternative songs making it the band’s most successful song.
The year 2010 was generally a very good year for The Black Keys. They were nominated for four Grammy Awards. Brothers was rated by Rolling Stone magazine as no. 2 in the Best Albums of 2010 category. The band was judged as the Artist of the Year for 2010 by the Spin magazine.
