The Fray is a Denver-based alternative rock group that gained prominence with the release of their debut album released in 2005 titled How to Save a Life, which did not only won much critical acclaim but also went two times platinum in America and one time platinum in the UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia. Their very first single titled Over My Head created waves around the world, becoming a hit on the US top ten. Their second single called How to Save a Life again marked the band with global popularity, with the track being charted among Billboard Hot 100’s top three songs, while also entering in the top five hits across UK, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Canada and Australia. Instant global fame has placed the rock band amidst its best known contemporaries such as Keane and Coldplay with whom they are often compared. Their frequently dominant application of the piano has convinced critics of the band’s sound similarity with the former groups, however, according to Fray, their main source inspiration are bands like U2, Better Than Ezra, Counting Crows and The Wallflowers. The Fray tickets have been the subject of town talk since the band’s first album made it to the market.
The Fray released its earliest record in 2002 titled Movement EP, which was followed by a second EP called Reason EP the next year. The latter EP was co-produced by Aaron Johnson and helped the band win local fame, prompting the group to include the same producer in the creation of its debut offering. The group worked on launching a single and tried to get its songs aired on KTCL, a local radio station, which disapproved of eight of their tracks until the band submitted a demo version of Cable Car. The track received airplay in a KTCL radio show, and became a hit prompting many requests for replay. It was then that the group changed the track’s name to Over My Head, while its airplay went further up bringing them more recognition among their local fans. In 2004, Westword voted for the Fray to be the Best New Band and it was through Westword that the group was discovered by Daniel David, an A&R man of Epic Records. It was now only a matter of time that the band was offered to sing with Epic Records by the end of 2004.
Current members of The Fray include Joe King as the rhythm guitarist, bass guitarist and backing vocalist since 2002; Isaac Slade as the lead vocalist, and pianist since 2002; Dave Welsh as the lead guitarist since 2003; Ben Wysocki as the drummer since 2003. The group’s touring lineup includes Jimmy Stofer, Dan Lavery and Jeremy McCoy, all three as the bass guitarists. The band former members include Mike Ayars who played the lead guitar; Dan Battenhouse on the bass guitar; Zach Johnson as the dummer and Caleb Slade as the bass guitarist. The group released its second album titles The Fray in 2009, many songs from which were spotted on Billboard charts while the album itself debuted as a Billboard 200’s number one and sold a hundred and sevety-nine thousand copies in the initial week of availability.
By 2010, The Fray released a third EP titled Shock Value II, featuring Timbaland in the track Undertow that was though not released as a single, yet garnered enough attention to be enter Billboard Hot 100. In 2011, the group released a third studio offering called Scars and Stories, the lyrical content of which took a more aggressive turn in songs like Heartbeat, Here We Are and The Fighter. This production of this album included Brendan O’Brien who had already worked with Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine and Bruce Springsteen.
The Fray have received many awards and nominations since 2006, from the likes of Teen Choice Award, Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards and many more. The groups won three Billboard Music Awards in 2006, and received three Grammy nominations the following year.
