The band Train was formed in the year 1994, when Patrick Monahan moved to California and met Rob Hotchkiss, who was performing in local clubs and coffee shops around that time. They decided to form a band together, and recruited Charlie Colin, Jimmy Stafford and Scott Underwood to form Train. The group wanted to get signed with a famous recording label in order to get the right kind of exposure, and made an attempt to get a deal with Columbia Records in the year 1996. The label, however, did not accept them and the band continued to perform on national tours, opening for famous groups including Counting Crows, Cracker, Hootie and the Blowfish, Barenaked Ladies and many others. They ended up releasing their debut album independently. The album was a self-titled one, and was released on the 24th of February, 1998. Three singles, I Am, Meet Virginia and Free were released from the album, all going on to become big hits with the audience. The single Meet Virginia went in the top twenties on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching number fifteen. The album became largely successful and put the band under the spotlight, getting certified platinum by the RIAA.
Shortly after the success of the first album, the group started to work on the next one. Their second album was released on the 27th of March, 2001 and was named Drops of Jupiter. The producer of the album was Brendan O' Brian, who had previously done work alongside famous musicians including Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam and many more. This album went on to become the first multi-platinum album of the band and reached number six on the Billboard 200 chart. It also peaked at number eight on the UK charts, becoming a hit all over the world. One of the singles of the album, She's On Fire was featured in a movie called The Animal, which was released in the year 2001.
Before the second album was released, the group released a single called Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me). The single became extremely popular, and reached the Hot 100 chart on the 10th of March, 2001, and stayed there for a staggering fifty-three weeks. It also managed to win a Grammy Award for the Best Arrangement along with a Grammy Award for the Best Rock Song. The third album of the Train was released in June, 2003 and was titled My Private Nation. The lead single of the album was Calling All Angels, which became the third single by the band to reach the top twenty charts. It also reached the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks list of the Billboard, and was featured in the popular show, One Tree Hill. The music videos of the songs from the album also became huge hits, being featured on all the top music channels such as MTV. In 2004, one of their songs, Ordinary was featured in Spider Man 2.
