Away from the heavy-riff infused, electronically synthesized blaring of mainstream rock lurks a sound rising from the Deep South.  In its early years, Southern Rock fed upon the scraps thrown away by rock ‘n’ rollers Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Buddy Holly and was given some tender loving care by the likes of Janis Joplin. Shying away from the madding forces of the "British Invasion" a.k.a The Beatles and company, it found a willing host in the likes of the The Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead.
