The franchise was originally established by the name of New England Whalers that played in the World Hockey Association (WHA). The franchise was founded in November 1971, when Boston, Massachusetts was awarded with an expansion franchise by the WHA. After the birth of Whalers, the team started playing their home games at the Boston Arena and Boston Garden for their first two seasons. But due to some problems it was getting hard for the team to schedule their matches there, so they had to relocate to Hartford in Connecticut in 1974. As the team moved to Hartford for their 1974-75 season, their home arena was still in the finishing process, which is why Whalers had to play some of the games from that season at the Big E Coliseum. After the completion of Hartford Civic Center, Whalers moved in to play their first sellout game at their new home ground on January 11, 1975. Due to failed construction and engineering measures that were taken during the construction of the Civic Center, the roof of the arena came down due to heavy snow and rain falls later. And, even though Whalers were still headquartered in Hartford, they had to play their home games at the Springfield Civic Center in late 70s. And in the mean time, Hartford Civic Center was undergoing the rebuilding process.   

After the merger of all the leagues into National Hockey League, Whalers along with other notable WHA teams became members of NHL back in 1979. After the team was admitted to National Hockey League, it had to be renamed to Hartford Whalers because Boston Bruins were already based in New England. After their inception in the NHL, Whalers weren’t able to perform as well as they did before and the team was seldom seen playing in playoffs. At that time, the team was owned by Peter Karmanos according to whom the team was meant to stay in Hartford at least till 1998. But his claims were falsified when the team had to move somewhere else as they weren’t able to strike a deal for the construction of new arena in the region in 1997. In July of 1997, it was announced by Karmanos that the team would be moving to Raleigh, North Carolina where they’ll be renamed to Carolina Hurricanes.

The newly renamed Hurricanes were expected to play their home games at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, but the arena wasn’t complete at the time they moved in, so for their first two seasons they had to play their home games in Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro. Since the arena was ninety minutes away from Raleigh, the team suffered a lot from low attendance, as most of the fans showed their unwillingness to watch a team that just moved in. Unfortunately it wasn’t just the attendance issues that the team suffered from, they also weren’t able to perform all that well. And their lackluster performance continued even after the team moved to its home arena in Raleigh. Hurricanes kept on struggling with their performance up until 2002 when they started showing some improvements.

In 2006, the Hurricanes managed to shock the fans with their incredible performance as they posted the best regular season finish. After making into the conference semifinals, the Hurricanes defeated New Jersey Devils just to meet Sabres in the Conference finals. And after pulling off a victory over Buffalo Sabres, the team went on to Stanley Cup finals for the second time to face Oilers. After pulling off a surprising victory over Oilers, the team managed to bring home its only major achievement in NHL.
