It was decided in 1987 that Charlotte would get an National Basketball Association expansion franchise. Shortly afterward, the Richardson Sports announced that they were going to build a stadium with a seating capacity of more than 70,000 fans on a specific spot in uptown Charlotte. The whole project, until that time was privately financed. But the South Carolina Governor set up a committee to lend a hand to the cause, and the sports loving city came together to help. Several preseason games were hosted in 1989 and in later years as well, paving way to Carolina Panthers' franchise.
