This stadium had the capacity to accommodate 7,600 people. In 1948, it was extended to 16,000 seats. Before the 1949 Gator Bowl event, the stadium was extended to accommodate more than 35,000 people. Gator Bowl continued to be played at this stadium through 1993. In 1994, it was held at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Florida. During the starting years of the event, it included an at-large challenger and a team from the Southern Conference. From 1953, it featured a Southeastern Conference team versus an at-large challenger. From the year 1953 to 1975, one SEC squad played in 20 out of the 24 playoffs.
The games played from 1976 to 1995 mostly included a team from south-east region of the U.S versus a squad from another area. From 1996 to 2006, the Gator Bowl included the Big East team versus ACC. In 2007, the ACC played in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. This time Gator Bowl started featuring ACC team versus the Notre Dame, the Big East or Big 12. In 2010, it included the Big Ten as well as the SEC and Outback Bowl together with Capital One Bowl. During 2011 match, Gator Bowl featured Mississippi State University as well as University of Michigan.
