Founded as the Philadelphia Warriors back in 1946, Golden State Warriors attained their present name after they moved to Oakland California in 1971. Warriors presently play as the members of National Basketball Association’s Pacific Division of Western Conference. When it was formed, the team was originally a part of Basketball Association of American, but later after the merger, they joined NBA.
Eddie Gottlieb was hired as the team’s first coach and General as the Philadelphia Warriors were formed. The team was named after the team of same name who had been playing in the city. The team played its 1946-47 inaugural season as the charter member of the BAA, shocked the viewers as they went on to win a championship crown in their inaugural season. While still in Philadelphia, Warriors tasted success for the second time when they won the championship again in their 1955-56 season. The Warriors defeated Fort Wayne Pistons to win the title in the finals.
Before moving to Oakland, California in 1971, Warriors first relocation occurred when Franklin Mieuli bought the bigger portion of the shares and decided to move the franchise to San Francisco in 1962. After the move, the team was renamed to San Francisco Warriors. The team initially played its home games at Cow Palace and then later they moved to San Francisco Civic Auditorium. During their play in San Francisco, Warriors made their major achievement when they claimed the Western Division Championship. The team played its last season as the San Francisco Warriors in 1970-71.
The team played the following season as the Golden State Warriors after they started playing most of their home games in Oakland. Since they stopped playing their home games in San Francisco, the team was renamed to Golden State Warriors; hence becoming the only NBA franchise which doesn’t have the name of its city or state attached to it.
With the exception of the year 1974, Warriors managed to make it to the playoffs during their play between 1971 and 1977. Also during that time, Warriors took home their first and only championship as the Golden State Warriors in their 1974-75 season. In the finals the team went up against the Washington Bullets, who were highly expected to win the championship. But with a four game sweep, Warriors were able to cause the biggest upset in the NBA history as they won the championship.
After giving a solid competitive performance for quite some time, Warriors started struggling with their performance with the demise of several of the team’s key players. After making it to the playoffs for the final time in 1977, Warriors gave luck luster performance during their play between 1978 and 1987. During that time, team also saw a number of coach changes with hopes of improving the team’s performance.
With George Karl as the team’s new head coach, the team enjoyed a brief amount of success which was short lived. During Karl’s tenure the team managed to make it to the Conference Semifinals in 1987 when they met Lakers. Both the teams went on to play so well, that the match went on to be known as one of the Greatest NBA Matches. In their later seasons, Golden State Warriors weren’t really able to keep a steadily performance; hence their comparatively good season was instantly followed by a bad one.
In 2010, a renewal and rebuilding process of the team kicked in as the ownership of the team changed hands. The Warriors were sold off to Mandalay Entertainment’s Peter Guber and his partner Joe Lacob for $ 450 Million by Chris Cohan. Several other changes in the roster of the team were also made with the hopes of the having a bit more competitive team.
