Indiana Hoosiers play for the Indiana University in Bloomington and are the members of Big Ten Conference of the NCAA Division. Indiana University has twenty four varsity teams, which represent the University in Basketball, Football, Rowing, Soccer, Tennis, Golf, Cross Country, Baseball, Volleyball, Swimming & Diving and Track. So far Hoosiers have claimed twenty three NCAA Championships. Hoosiers’ men’s Soccer team claimed seven titles, men’s swimming & diving has won six, men’s Cross Country has claimed three, Men’s Basketball has won five, while one each has been claimed by Wrestling and Men’s Outdoor Track & Field.        

Indiana Hoosiers Men’s basketball team is amongst some of the most successful teams on campus. Playing their home games at the Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Hoosiers have so far claimed National Championship on five instances along with twenty Big Ten Conference Championships. With their top notch performance for every season and the other, Hoosiers have managed to stay in top twenty five in the national rankings for most of their tenure. Over their years of play, Hoosiers’ men’s basketball team has accomplished several feats and among those is also the achievement of winning the National Championship title after having an undefeated 1975-76 season. The team won two more championships, one in 1981, while the other one in 1987. All these three championships came to the team under the leadership of Bob Knight, while the fourth one came to the team under the leadership of Mike Davis in 2002. Afterwards, as the team struggled under Mike Davis, he was replaced by Kelvin Sampson in 2006. Later Sampson was also fired due to some critical violations of NCAA rules after which, the team ultimately got Dan Dakich as its head coach.

Indiana Hoosiers football team has also made quite a mark ever since their inception in 1884. The team presently plays its home games at the Memorial Stadium, where they moved in 1960. Ever since then, the stadium has undergone several overhauls which also includes the installation of artificial turf. Presently the stadium is back to natural grass once again, after the installation and removal of the Astroturf. Amongst some of their notable achievements over the past includes 1979 Holiday Bowl, 1988 Liberty Bowl, and 1991 Copper Bowl.

Like most of the college teams, Indiana Hoosiers also have a bitter rivalry with the Purdue Boilermakers of the Purdue University in West Lafayette. The football teams of the both sides have been colliding with each other for the Old Oaken Bucket ever since 1925. Hoosier’s and Boilermakers basketball teams also go head to head with each other every year. Starting from 2001-02, Hoosiers and Boilermakers met each other in an all sports tournament to take home the Crimson & Gold Cup. With 4 tournament wins over Boilermakers, Hoosiers are in the lead so far.    

Apart from Purdue, Indiana University also has rivalry with Illinois Fighting Illini when it comes to football. But the football teams’ rivalry is not as fierce as the rivalry between Fighting Illini and Hoosiers basketball teams. As of the moment, Hoosiers lead the series with 82 wins over Illini. This basketball rivalry between the two schools has been for decades now, and it only increases with time. Michigan State Spartans and Hoosiers also keep a rivalry amongst them. Their rivalry started back in 1950 on the football field. Both the teams compete for the Old Brass Spittoon.

Indiana Hoosiers rivalry with Kentucky Wildcats is also worth mentioning. The basketball teams of the both sides compete against each other every year for a match that has now achieved national prominence. The match has been played at any neutral site within Louisville and Indianapolis ever since 1991. However this tradition was put to an end when the teams started playing at their own home ground in alternating years. The two also compete on the football field where Hoosiers have the all time series lead with eighteen wins.
