Famous businessman Jack Kent Cookie was the main brain behind forming the Kings in the year 1967 along with 6 other teams as expansion franchises. The Kings played their initial games at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach as their own stadium was under construction, in December 1967 the famous Forum Arena opened and the Kings played their next 32 seasons on this venue. Currently they play all their home games at the very huge Staples Center located on 1111 S. Figueroa Street Los Angeles and this center has the seating capacity for over 18000 spectators.
In their 1st season the Kings were off to a flying start as they stood 2nd in the Division and qualified for the playoffs but lost in the quarter-final 3-4 to the Minnesota North Stars in a tough match. 1968-69 season was another good one for the Kings, despite coming 4th in the Division they again qualified for the playoffs and this time won their first ever quarterfinal by beating Oakland Seals 4-3, they lost the semifinals to the more experienced St. Louis Blues 0-4. From 1969 to 1973 the Kings failed to display their previous form and didn’t qualify for the playoffs mainly due to frequent player changes, this also resulted in lowering fan attendance at their matches. In 1973-74 season the Kings were seen in their old form as they stood 3rd in the Division and raced to the playoffs losing the quarterfinal to Chicago Blackhawks 1-4.
1975 onwards till 1980 Kings performance was average as they qualified every time for the playoffs but mostly were beaten in the first round. In 1981 they again shocked everyone by winning their first ever Conference semifinal beating Edmonton Oilers 3-2 and went on to play their 1st Conference final which they lost to the Vancouver Canucks 1-4. Kings performance was once again back to mediocre for the next few years but things changed when they had a new owner Bruce McNall who acquired the team in 1988. McNall at once stunned everyone by acquiring the leagues star player Wayne Gretzky as captain who went on to play a pivotal role in many wins for the team. In 1989 Gretzky became the highest scorer and after a long time the Kings again played the Divisional finals but lost badly to their more experienced old rivals Calgary Flames 0-4. 1992-93 season saw Gretzky in his top form and under his leadership the Kings were unstoppable they beat the Canucks, the Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs to reach their 1st ever Stanley Cup final but lost 1-4 due to penalty by the authorities.
Gretzky along with other star players like Jari Kurri, Rob Blake and Tony Granato made the Kings hot favorite for sports lovers and all the matches started to sell out in advance. In 1995 due to management and financial issues McNall had to leave the team, the Kings were near to bankruptcy, Gretzky departed, Dave Taylor joined as new coach and the Kings went into a rebuilding phase but this was not useful as they failed to qualify for the playoffs till 1998. In 2000-01 season the Kings stood 3rd in the Pacific Division and after almost 9 years played their 1st Conference semifinal losing to the Colorado Avalanche 3-4, after that till now the Kings haven’t been able to show an impressive performance.
Although the Kings have not displayed their famous fiery game, they still have a formidable line up of star players like Kyle Clifford, Willie Mitchell, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Wayne Simmonds and Jonathan Quick which can upset any good team.
