Their national titles are in varied sports including basketball, boxing, cross country, football, gymnastics, hockey, soccer, softball and wrestling. Their most successful teams are Men's Cross Country that brought home national glory eight times and football with six national level titles.
Spartans are the varsity athletic teams of the Michigan State University. They have years and years of glory attached to them and have polished some great Athletes from their alumni. Their mission is to "gather and engage community to teach, support and celebrate their student-athletes in their quest of excellence."They have twenty five different teams participating in NCAA's Division I-A and the Big Ten Conference. Twelve of their teams are represented by men while the other thirteen teams are for women.
The Michigan State Atheletes were not always Spartans, for ages they were called "Aggies". This institution is actually an agricultural school and it was called Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. Thus its teams were Aggies until the Michigan State decided to hold a contest for a new nickname. They got lots and lots of entries and decided to go for "Michigan Staters". The sports reporters of Lansing State Journal and the Capital News were still not done; they wanted a shorter and more heroic name. They went through the losing entries again and came up with the Spartans. The name seemed perfect as coincidently Justin Morrill had referred Land Grant Schools to Ancient Sparta making the name historically relevant.
The Michigan State and football together go way back in the history. Michigan State Spartans are six times national champions in Football and have also won the Rose Bowl thrice. Their first national title was in 1951 and the last national title came in 1966. Spartans, since then are striving hard to attain their long lost glory and this year seems perfect for that! The team currently plays in Spartan Stadium and their coach is Mark Dantonio who has a record of 18-17 in the last three years.
The Michigan Spartan's Basketball team created vim and buzz with a glorious victory in the 2000 National championships. This was the second national title by them in basketball; the first one was long ago in 1979. Some of the greatest NBA Players have been Spartans including Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Shawn Respert, Steve Smith, Greg Kelser, Jay Vincent, Steve Smith, Scott Skiles, Jason Richardson, Mateen Cleaves, Alan Anderson, Zach Randolph, Morris Peterson, Eric Snow, Mike Peplowski, Charlie Bell, Shannon Brown, Maurice Ager and Paul Davis.
The Spartans Ice Hockey team and field hockey team have also made Michigan proud with their excellent play. Rod Brind'Amour, Anson Carter, Donald McSween, Adam Hall, John-Michael Liles, Justin Abdlekader, Kelly Miller and Kip Miller, Ryan Miller and Drew Miller are a few of the Spartans that became players for National Hockey League.
