The Michigan Wolverines account for twenty-seven varsity sports teams at the University of Michigan. It encompasses all sports excluding men’s ice hockey and lacrosse and women’s water polo, which compete in other associations. Thus, the teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA’s) Division I and Big Ten Conference. The Michigan Wolverines are the only representatives from NCAA’s Division I to have garnered maximum number of national titles in hokey, swimming and diving. University of Michigan is well regarded for its athletics. It has amassed fifty-two national championships in twelve sports including four major sports; baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey. The history dates back to 1865 when the Intercollegiate competition commenced and the baseball team emerged as headliner by winning first three contests. The year 1973 opened door for women’s athletics as basketball, swimming and diving, tennis, field hockey and volleyball became part of the varsity sports.
Michigan Wolverines have had their share of heightened success and popularity. They have also shined in women’s field hockey and softball. However, Kellen Russell (Wrestling), Sam Mikulak (Men’s Gymnastics), and Kylee Botterman (Women’s Gymnastics) are the reigning NCAA Individual Champions. The Michigan Wolverines have also won NCAA National Championship in other sports in the previous years; Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Golf, Men’s Swimming and Diving, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Indoor Track and Field, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Women’s Rowing, Men and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field etc. Moreover, Michigan Wolverines compete for three different conferences; the Big Ten Conference, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). The Wolverines have enjoyed tremendous success right from its initiation. They have bagged a total of three hundred and forty-seven women’s and men’s titles and have ten regular-season titles and eight CCHA titles to their credit. In 2009, women’s water polo team lived up to its name and fetched CWPA divisional title highlighting their eighth consecutive win. Thus Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Basketball, Football, Field Hockey, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field, Volleyball and Wrestling are among the many teams that left their mark in the Big Ten Conference Team Championships.
The University of Michigan Athletic Department accounts for a vast array of men’s and women’s athletic teams; baseball, basketball, tennis, ice hockey, lacrosse, cross country, and golf are only a handful of men’s athletic teams. Whereas some of the women’s teams include: rowing, soccer, softball, water polo, volleyball, and tennis. But by and large baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey are considered to be the major sports and are undoubtedly some of the most popular ones too. Some of the most eminent players and coaches who have contributed enormously to the four major teams are George Sisler, J.J Putz, Barry Larkin, Jim Abbott, Jamal Crawford, Cazzie Russell, Jimmy King, Roy Tarpley, Loy Vaught, Terry Mills, Fielding H. Yost, Harry Kipke, Bo Schembechler and Rich Rodriguez. Hence, it is due to their unfaltering efforts that these teams managed to land in the championships. Speaking of the champions, the Michigan Wolverines have also made their presence known in the Olympics. They have been recipients of one hundred and thirty-five Olympic medals; sixty-five gold, thirty-two silver and thirty-eight bronze.
Apart from the main athletic teams there were other sports introduced by the Club Sports Program at the Michigan University. These clubs were developed, managed and supervised by the students, faculty and the staff. Sailing, Boxing (men and women), Dance, Cycling, Water Ski, Table Tennis, Shotokan, Rugby (men and women), and fencing were a few among the thirty-five clubs established earlier. However, in 2000 a revamped perspective of these clubs came into existence as a result of which Varsity Club Sports was formed. The sole purpose of this club is to recognize, motivate and support the aspiring and existing talent to improve and produce better results. Consequently when these teams reach a certain level they are approved of becoming part of the Varsity Sports at Michigan and are hence given varsity status. The current Varsity Club Sports are; Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Rowing, Women’s Synchronized Swimming and Women’s Synchronized Skating. Thus, University of Michigan has come a long way as far as athletics is concerned. Michigan Wolverines are recognized through University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor, Athlete of the Year, NCAA Division I: Director’s Cup, Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, Big Ten Athlete of the Year, Academic All-Americans, and Big Ten Medal of Honor respectively.
