Minneapolis Tribune along with Minnesota Daily held a competition to come up with an original song for the local football team. They were looking for a replacement for Hail Minnesota. Publically known as Robert Lamar, Floyd Hutsell's song won the contest. Initially, it was called 'Minnesota, Hats Off To Thee' but was renamed later. The university had been using different colors for the graduation ceremony for many years. But in 1880, a teacher finally came up with the idea of using uniform colors, maroon and gold. As the years passed by, maroon and gold slowly became the official varsity colors. Goldy Gopher, the official mascot of the team also has a story associated with it. In the eighteen hundreds a newspaper published nine gophers' torsos with heads of the local Minnesota politicians as gopher. The varsity picked the nick later. Golden was added to depict the golden era of the varsity's football team.
Williams Arena plays hosts to all basketball games of the Gophers whereas the Siebert Field hosts all the home baseball games. TCF Bank Stadium is home to the Gopher's football team whereas for everything else there are Mariucci and Ridder Arenas.
