Freestyle events are now major crowd-pullers, with trucks navigating through obstacles including "pyramids" formed by adjacent vehicles making a stair, dirt hills, stacked-up cars & trailer homes. Six judges use comprehensive criteria to mark the participants; including saves, aggression, impact speed, & use of specific tricks (slap wheelies, donuts). Since the year 2000, trophies have been awarded to the champions in each category in the World Finals.

The season-long tour's main activity is from January to March. The pinnacle is reached in late March with the Monster Jam World Finals at Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas. Racing & Freestyle champions are crowned at the event. The Monster Jam European Tour markets the sport globally in summer & autumn, while domestic competitions also run in the Monster Jam Summer Heat. The focus has always been on the thrilling high-octane action, though the death of a spectator, 6-year-old Sebastian Hizey, by flying debris from a truck's driveshaft loops, did cause strengthening of security measures in 2009.

Since 2003, Speed Channel has brought Monster Jam to diehard fans the world over. Prior to this, ESPN2 & TNN had broadcast the events.
