This particular event, also known as the Mac Tools US Nationals and held in Clermont, Indiana, awards its winners with the Wally Parks Trophy statue in honor of the founder of the NHRA, Wally Parks. This trophy is best known by its nickname, Wally, with the NHRA itself being divided into several divisions. The topmost division is the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series that consists of four different classes; Top Fuel Dragster, Pro Stock, Funny Car and Pro Stock Motorcycle. There are also over twelve Sportsman Classes for which drivers compete in races such as Snowmobile, Super Street, Motorcycle Classes, Super Gas, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Competition Eliminator, Top Sportsman, Super Comp, Top Dragster, Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. This class is the largest class in the NHRA and consists mainly of non-professional drag racers who are dues paying members of the NHRA. They make most of the eighty thousand members of the organization.
The Nationals NHRA, however, focuses mainly on the Professional Class of the NHRA which is made up of professional drag race drivers. There are a number of champions in the many events the NHRA organizes each year; the Top Alcohol Dragster in 2009 was Bill Reichert, the Alcohol Funny Car winner in 2009 was Frank Manzo, the Comp Eliminator winner was Bruno Massel, the Super-Stock winner was Jimmy DeFrank and the Stock winner was Edmond Richardson.
