The term "Cornhuskers" went into use after the University football team's upset victory over Iowa in 1893 was described as "We have met the Cornhuskers, & they are ours". The city campus's famous Memorial Stadium was the site of an 86,304 attendance record when the football team locked horns with Louisiana-Lafayette. Many legendary figures have graced its hallowed turf, playing before unbelievably passionate fans. Hawks Championship Field and Tom & Nancy Osborne Athletics Complex provide perfect practice & conditioning venues. The much-decorated Cornhuskers volleyball team plays in the Nebraska Coliseum, a facility they share with the wrestling team. Basketball, gymnastics, and swimming & diving competitions are hosted by the Bob Devaney Sports Center. It also boasts the world's 7th hydraulic banked track for indoor track & field events. With the Nebraska Soccer Field, Haymarket Park (baseball) & Pioneers Park (cross country) providing brilliant sports infrastructure, the Cornhuskers have established a legacy of their own in collegiate athletics circles.
The Athletics Director is Nebraska legend Tom Osborne, who won 3 national football titles as coach in a 25-year stint. Bo Pellini is head football coach, & has led the University's most followed sports team with great success. The list of renowned players includes Brandon Buckman, Jeff Leise (baseball), Kellen Huston & Kyle Vanden Bosch (football).
The Cornhuskers currently have Big 12 champions in 18 different disciplines, with NCAA national championships for wrestling (Jordan Burroughs), Long Jump (Nicholas Gordon) & women's bowling. Nebraska Cornhuskers' valiant football team followed the successes of 1970 & 1971 with three national championships inside four years (94, 95, and 97) under the coaching of Tom Osborne, becoming the second team to achieve the feat. Only recently, the team achieved the first shutout in Holiday Bowl history by blanking Arizona 33-0. 260 Cornhuskers are included in the Academic All-Americans list, more than any other American institute.
